Wolhusen can be explored through a range of interests: history and culture, walks and sports, as well as individual attractions with specific time or access requirements. The stated walking times and different conditions for visits are particularly useful when planning your day.

History and Historic Sites

The remains of the Outer Castle of Wolhusen still stand high above the town. It was once the largest fortress-style castle complex in the Canton of Lucerne. Wolhusen Castle and its grounds are open to the public. An open tower room and an information panel are located on the former stump of the keep. The castle lies along a signposted circular hiking trail to historically significant sites in the surrounding area; the trail starts at Wolhusen railway station.

The “Naherholungsgebiet Burg” (Castle Recreation Area) hike is 5.6 kilometres long and takes 1 hour and 35 minutes. It is suitable for families, can be done independently and is part of the Raiffeisen Sumsi Trails. Its inclusion in the programme may change if the trail programme is revised. Also take current trail conditions into account when planning.

Built in 1661, the Chapel of the Dead houses a danse macabre featuring real human skulls, described as the most interesting danse macabre in the Central Swiss landscape. The chapel was placed under federal protection in 1956 and added to the cantonal register of monuments in 1965. The Fontannen Mill also brings together several historical dates: a mill in the Fontannen Valley is documented as far back as 1584, the present mill building bears the date 1663, and it was ceremonially inaugurated in 2002 after careful restoration. Visits to the Fontannen Mill are possible by appointment; arrange your visit in advance.

Culture and Events

The Wolhuser Forum for History offers village tours led by members of its board and organises exhibitions. Some of the events organised by the forum are open to the public; dates and programmes vary. If you have a particular event in mind, check whether it is open to the public and when it takes place.

The KKLW cultural and communications venue holds six to eight events each year, covering cabaret, music, dance, theatre and art exhibitions. The specific event date is key to planning your trip. The Tropenhaus Wolhusen is rented out exclusively for events (as of 26 August 2026); check its status before planning a visit.

Leisure and Activities

The Gütsch-Sigristweiher area has been developed as a freely accessible recreation area with walking paths, benches and fire pits. The unheated Wolhusen open-air swimming pool offers swimming, sports and play facilities for all ages. These include a 25-metre swimming pool, a children’s and baby pool, a 1-metre diving board, a 3-metre diving platform and a water slide. A leisure pool with jets and a waterfall adds to the facilities.

Use of the Wolhusen ice and roller hockey rink also depends on the season: in winter it operates as a natural ice rink, and in summer it is used for inline skating. Llama trekking in the Wolhusen area involves a two-and-a-half-hour walk, including an extended picnic break, accompanied by llamas. Compared with the 1-hour-and-35-minute “Naherholungsgebiet Burg” hike, this is the longer time commitment for an activity.

The privately run Sattenlegi observatory is located on Steinhuserberg, 806 metres above sea level. It welcomes interested visitors for stargazing on request. This means it has different access requirements from the freely accessible recreation area: contact the observatory in advance to arrange a visit.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

The Wolhusen–Lucerne service runs every half hour during peak periods. Check the timetable for your planned travel date. Wolhusen railway station has 139 covered bicycle parking spaces. It is also the starting point for the signposted circular hiking trail to historically significant sites in the surrounding area.
