Emmetten: Hiking, Winter Routes and Village Culture
Accommodation in Emmetten
Emmetten combines its location above Lake Lucerne with hiking trails, winter routes and activities centred on the village and mountain landscape.
Landscape and Location
Emmetten is located on an elevated pre-Alpine terrace above the southern shore of Lake Lucerne. The municipality stretches from the lakeshore to the summit of Schwalmis. Notable mountains above and around the village include Niderbauen Chulm at 1,923 metres and Oberbauenstock at 2,117 metres. Emmetten is part of the Klewenalp–Lake Lucerne region’s local recreation area and lies on the cantonal road between Beckenried and Seelisberg. The lakeshore, village and summits therefore offer different points of reference for planning a day out.
Hiking and Wildlife Watching
The Emmetten Wildlife Observation Trail is a 10.95-kilometre hike of moderate difficulty. Route options include walking from Niederbauen to StockhĂĽtte or via Heitliberg to Klewenalp. Depending on the route and conditions, the hike takes between three and four and a half hours. Sixteen information boards provide details about local wildlife and twelve different bird species. This lets you consider the route and time required alongside your interest in wildlife and birds.
A guided wildlife-watching tour can be booked from the Niederbauen mountain station. A break at Schwändiport Alp is planned, with further wildlife observation through a telescope; scheduling may vary. The “From the Spring to the Lake” hike starts at the valley station of the Emmetten–Stockhütte gondola lift at Dorfstrasse 28. Guided departures are arranged on request.
Circular Routes and Two-Wheeled Activities
The Goldi Route – Tour 926 is described as a circular route for a family day trip or a leisurely e-bike tour. The Goldi Gwundernasenweg Emmetten offers a different focus: On this family-themed trail, you can listen to a story on your smartphone and solve related puzzles. The free circular walk takes about an hour. It starts at the Volg supermarket on the village square, passes the Niederbauenbahn, follows the Höhenweg and returns to the village square.
The Natural Bike Park Emmetten offers around three kilometres of forest trails. About 30 colour-coded signs explain the route options and riding techniques. On the bikeboard track, the course runs from StockhĂĽtte to Emmetten; long straight sections alternate with tight turns, and there are views of Lake Lucerne. The Emmetten Archery Park offers a course in woodland near the StockhĂĽtte mountain station. Its availability may vary by season.
Winter Routes and Mountain Railway
The Stockhütte–Emmetten sledging run is 4.77 kilometres long, rated easy and listed as taking about one hour and 31 minutes. The Schattigenstock snowshoe tour covers 2.34 kilometres and is classified as an easy winter hike. Conditions for both activities depend on the snow and operations. The Emmetten–Stockhütte gondola lift is a six-person gondola; the ride takes about ten minutes. Check the latest operating details before setting off.
Village Culture and Regional Experiences
The Emmetten Dance of Death is housed in the Heiligkreuz Chapel in Emmetten. It is an oil painting on wood made up of 23 almost square panels. The work was created around 1710 for the ossuary, which had recently been built at the time. The village’s history also goes back a long way: The name Emmetten appears in the Engelberg Monastery’s land register in 1150. In 1275, a Cunrat von Emmetten is named as a witness in a dispute between Engelberg Monastery and the people of the Uri Alpine region. According to local tradition, the first resident established his home in Ryters, a meadow enclosed by Brennwald, and walked to the Sunday service at St. Jakob.
The Emmetten Village Market with its Alpabzug (cattle descent from the alpine pastures) takes place every year in September. Numerous market stalls offer homemade regional products and handicrafts; individual vendors may vary. As a seasonal, bookable experience, the Nidwalden Beer Trail runs from Klewenalp to StockhĂĽtte. The offer includes four tasting stations, a three-course meal and an earth cellar in the middle of nature. The specific menus may change.
