Sachseln combines the history of a pilgrimage destination with hikes of varying lengths and seasonal leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Sachseln, your planned activities can shape your stay: the history of the church and museum, a route to FlĂĽeli-Ranft or a hike to the geographical centre of Obwalden each offer a different focus.

Sachseln lies along the popular tourist route from Lucerne via the BrĂĽnig Pass to Interlaken and is very easy to reach by train and car. This gives you two options for getting here, while the local trails each have their own destinations and time requirements.

Church, Pilgrimage Route and Bruder Klaus

The parish and pilgrimage church of Sachseln is a landmark visible from far away. Built between 1672 and 1684, it has housed the tomb of Bruder Klaus since 1679. The tomb chapel is attached to the old Sachseln church tower; it preserves the first burial place of Bruder Klaus. The tombstones from 1487 and 1518 have been preserved.

Sachseln and Flüeli-Ranft, the home of Niklaus von Flüe, were important stops on Switzerland’s historic Way of St James from the late Middle Ages onwards. The Museum Bruder Klaus also explores this history: its permanent exhibition tells the story of the life and work of Niklaus von Flüe and his wife, Dorothee Wyss. The museum is housed in a patrician house dating from 1784, surrounded by an expansive Baroque garden.

In Flüeli, which belongs to the municipality of Sachseln, the birthplace of Bruder Klaus stands on the von Flüe family’s ancestral estate. The house acquired its present appearance during a comprehensive restoration in 1925; its furnishings evoke the domestic culture of the late Middle Ages. Together, these places offer different perspectives on Bruder Klaus: the church and tomb in Sachseln, and the museum and birthplace in Flüeli.

Hikes by Duration and Destination

The circular hike Sachseln–Flüeli-Ranft–Sachseln is 10.23 kilometres long. It starts and ends at Sachseln railway station and takes about 3 hours and 7 minutes to walk. For a shorter outing, consider the summit hike to Stuckli Chriiz above Sachseln: it is 3.63 kilometres long, rated moderate and takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. Ascent conditions may vary depending on the weather. From the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views across the Sarneraa Valley.

Another hike leads from Sachseln village via Steinen and Churigen through the wild valley of the Dorfbach stream to Glotersegg. Allow about one and a quarter to one and a half hours for the walk. The geographical centre of the canton of Obwalden lies at Glotersegg, above the village in the municipality of Sachseln, and can be reached on foot, by bicycle and by car. From the viewpoint at Glotersegg, you can see Sachseln village, Lake Sarnen and the Sarneraa Valley, with views extending to Pilatus. The routes therefore differ not only in length but also in destination: FlĂĽeli-Ranft, the summit of Stuckli Chriiz and Glotersegg each offer a different focus.

When there is snow in winter, Glotersstrasse is suitable for sledging. The circular walk around Lake Sarnen can be started from Sachseln. Check seasonal trail conditions when planning a hike; the walking times given for the routes described are approximate.

Seasonal Activities and Leisure

The locomotive of the Sumsi steam railway has a real steam boiler and is heated with coal. The railway has operated at the lakeside playground in Sachseln since May 2015. It runs on weekends from April to October in dry weather. As exact operating days within this period should be checked, it is worth looking at the latest information before your visit.

Sachseln lido is a ten-minute walk from Sachseln railway station. Facilities include a beach volleyball court, a ping-pong table, a bathing island, a sandbox for small children, and a fire pit with a picnic area. As the facilities available may change, check what is currently on offer before your visit.

When planning your trip, you can compare the approximate walking times for the hikes with the seasonal operating conditions of the steam railway. This can help you plan your stay around whether you would like to spend more time exploring Sachseln’s history, taking a particular hike or enjoying a seasonal activity.
