Gächlingen: Autumn Festival, Church and Klettgau Vineyards
Accommodation in Gächlingen
Gächlingen offers several specific themes to help you plan your trip: the annual autumn festival, the church with its colourful windows, archaeological sites and a circular walk through the Klettgau vineyards. Which focus suits you depends on whether you choose an event, local history or a route as the reason for your visit. If you are looking for a hotel, this is a useful first step; the themes below offer different ideas for your stay.
Autumn festival with a new theme each year
The traditional autumn festival takes place every year on the first Sunday in October. The exact date and programme vary from year to year. If you are planning your stay around the festival, check the date for your travel year. Each edition has its own theme, which runs through the village exhibitions. This changing focus makes the festival year an important planning detail: the annual tradition remains the same, while the exhibitions reflect the current theme. Regional products made by the exhibitors themselves are also part of the offering. Festival food stalls and traditional brass band music can be found in various locations. The festival thus spreads exhibitions and places to eat across several locations in the village; individual vendors and programme items may vary.
Church and archaeological sites
Gächlingen Church was consecrated in 1845. Its tall tower is a prominent landmark in the village. Its large windows in vivid colours were designed by Franco Giacomel and have been a special attraction since 1976/78. The year of consecration and the window art draw attention to different historical aspects of the same building. Gächlingen is also associated with several periods of archaeological history. More than 100 features from the Early and Middle Neolithic were documented during the Gächlingen-Goldäcker excavation. La Hoguette culture pottery sherds were discovered at the site and date to approximately 5300 to 5000 BC. The number refers to the documented features from the excavation; the date range places the sherds in time. Roman pottery and the remains of a Roman brickworks were also discovered at the Gächlingen-Chüetel and Näppental sites. The Neolithic and Roman finds represent different points in time.
Circular walk through the vineyards
If you would like to include scenery and some activity in your stay, the circular walk is a specific option for an outing. It starts at the church in Gächlingen, passes through the Klettgau vineyards and by small vineyard huts, and continues to St. Moritz Church on the Hallauer Berg. This offers a different experience from the village programme at the autumn festival: here, a specific destination sets the course, while at the festival the changing theme shapes the village exhibitions. The circular walk is accessible via the Gächlingen Dorf stop. From Schaffhausen, travel by train and change to a bus in Neunkirch. As timetables may change, check the connection for your travel date.
Carriage rides and refreshments
Kutschen Fahrten Vogelsanger offers a small carriage with a sun canopy for four people, which is also suitable for longer tours. The offering also includes a large, comfortable and heated wagonette for eight people. The different capacities provide a practical point of comparison when planning a ride. The provider also offers carriage rides with breakfast or brunch. Check availability for your preferred ride with the provider in advance.
