Schleitheim offers several ways to explore history and landscape: the Museum Schleitheimertal traces the region’s story from the Neolithic period to the High Middle Ages; mining exhibits focus on gypsum extraction and tunnels; and a Roman-themed guided tour leads to the thermal bath ruins of Juliomagus. There is also Schleitheim Church and two trails with different starting and ending points. When planning your stay, it helps to choose a focus first: would you like to explore historical exhibitions and local history, experience a guided tour underground, or choose an outdoor route? Each option offers a different perspective.

Museums and historical perspectives

The archaeological exhibition at the Museum Schleitheimertal covers the prehistory of the Schleitheim Valley from the Neolithic period to the High Middle Ages. The Täuferzimmer (Anabaptist Room) offers a different glimpse into the past: it displays an original print of the Schleitheimer Articles from the 16th century. The museum thus brings together a broad overview of regional prehistory and a single historical printed work. It also commemorates the legendary St.S.S. tramway between Schaffhausen and Schleitheim.

The thermal bath museum is open year-round, wheelchair accessible, and suitable for children and school classes. If this information is important for your plans, check the latest visitor information before travelling.

Gypsum mining and underground experiences

The Schleitheim Gypsum Museum provides information about gypsum mining, which was carried out intensively in the region of the Canton of Schaffhausen in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum is located just before the last remaining accessible gypsum tunnel in the region. This brings together the historical context of mining and a specific site in the mining area.

At the former gypsum mine in Schleitheim, which is open to the public, visitors can venture about 200 metres into the mountain, until a small lake blocks the way. The approximate depth and the lake mark the described end point of the route underground. Since the mine and museum reopened in November 2024, an electrically powered train has also been taking visitors into the tunnel. Knowledgeable guides and train drivers lead and accompany guests through the mine. Check current visitor information before travelling.

Roman times and Schleitheim Church

A guided tour following the traces of the Romans in Schaffhauserland visits the ruins of the former central baths of the Roman settlement of Juliomagus. Juliomagus dates from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. The tour combines a visit to a specific archaeological site with the historical context of the Roman settlement.

Schleitheim Church also offers its own historical point of interest: its history dates back to the year 600. It is the oldest church in the Canton of Schaffhausen north of the Rhine. This precise geographical distinction is part of what makes it special; the church can thus be placed in the history of both the town and the canton.

Trails and scenery on the Randen

The Randen Trail starts at the post office in Schleitheim and runs for 16 kilometres to Merishausen. The Staabruch Tour, by contrast, starts and ends in Schleitheim. It loops around the town through forests, fields and former quarry landscapes. These key points are particularly useful when choosing a route: Merishausen is the destination of the Randen Trail, while the Staabruch Tour returns to Schleitheim. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Randen is a species-rich limestone spur of the Jura in the western part of the Canton of Schaffhausen. In spring, visitors can admire magnificent orchid species there, including the lady’s slipper. This seasonal floral highlight adds a distinct landscape perspective to the historical themes. If you are planning your stay around it, spring is the time to consider for this natural attraction.
