In Lower Klettgau, winegrowing, historic villages and trails through a varied landscape shape the travel experience. The district is located in the canton of Schaffhausen, covers 46.61 km² and extends from 390 to 642 metres above sea level. It comprises Hallau, Oberhallau, Trasadingen and Wilchingen. The hiking landscape includes vineyards, farmland, wooded areas, the Randen, gorges and the proximity of the High Rhine. Numerous hiking and cycling routes pass through winegrowing and scenic areas. If you are looking for a hotel, the places you plan to visit can help you choose a starting point.

Winegrowing and Regional Experiences

Hallau has 150 hectares of vineyards and is home to the largest contiguous vineyard area in German-speaking Switzerland. The vineyards are also closely packed in Wilchingen-Osterfingen, where they cover more than 6,000 ares. Pinot Noir, Riesling-Silvaner and Pinot Gris grapes grow throughout Klettgau. These grape varieties and vineyards provide a tangible regional setting for local wine offerings.

The Hallau Autumn Festivals have been held every year in October since 1935. They showcase Hallau, its wines, local products and the region. As the exact festival dates vary from year to year, check the event calendar when planning your trip. In Hallau, the Weinkrone, housed in a historic winemaker’s home, presents the history of regional winegrowing. It offers 55 wines from 25 wineries in Schaffhausen’s Blauburgunderland region for tasting and purchase; the selection may change, so it is worth checking the details before your visit.

Wine cellar tours are offered in Wilchingen, Osterfingen and Hallau. One or two selected wineries are featured at each destination, with tastings led by producers. Confirm dates and booking conditions in advance. At the Bergtrotte Osterfingen, regional cuisine is served alongside a wine press dating from 1584. Cultural events such as readings, jazz concerts and comedy are also part of its programme; events may vary.

Museums and Architectural History

The Hallau Local Museum focuses on rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries and has an extensive collection of weapons, with pieces dating from the early modern period to the present day. During regular opening hours, a working Linotype machine is also operated there. As this offering may change, check the museum’s latest information before your visit.

A notable historic site in Hallau is the Bergkirche St. Moritz. Built in 1491 and dedicated to Saint Maurice, it was designated a cultural property of national significance in 1974 because of its art-historical and historical importance. The church is just over a ten-minute walk away via the Chilcheweg. The Bänkli hike crosses the vineyards of Hallauerberg to the church, offering views across the whole of Klettgau and the Randen.

The Wilchingen Local Museum focuses on traditional rural living in Klettgau, tools and equipment used in agriculture and small businesses, as well as geology and village history. It also features writers’ rooms dedicated to Berta Hallauer, Albert Bächtold and Ruth Blum. The Jakob Ritzmann Room displays a collection of paintings by the artist. The museum thus offers insights into both everyday life and the region’s literature and art.

Compare Hiking Trails and Routes

The trails vary in theme and the time they take. The Hallau Panorama Tour is about 27 kilometres long, has around 200 metres of elevation gain and runs mostly along unpaved roads. The Blauburgunderland Panorama Trail crosses a ridge and focuses on views across the vineyards. The Bänkli hike, by contrast, has a specific destination at the mountain church and combines a walk through the vineyards with views of Klettgau and the Randen.

The Sculpture Trail between Osterfingen and Jestetten, which opened in 2025, features eleven wooden sculptures, most of them created by regional artists. It starts in the centre of Osterfingen and ends on the northern edge of Jestetten. The full route is listed as 8.6 kilometres, with around 200 metres of elevation gain and approximately two and a half hours of walking time. Route conditions may change, so check them before setting out. The Trasadingen Wine Trail offers a different time commitment, taking about an hour and featuring 22 information boards. It starts at the schoolhouse; guided tours are also available and should be confirmed in advance.

In Wilchingen, the self-guided Tree and Shrub Trail provides information about native forest plants. Along the path from the Wilchingen mountain chapel to the barbecue area, 54 trees and shrubs are labelled. You can explore the trail using a printed PDF or an app. As the information and the selection may change following maintenance work, check local information before travelling. In Oberhallau, the Graf & Gräfin estate offers activities including donkey picnics and walks with donkeys; book these activities and reconfirm them before your trip.
