Tuggen between the Linth Plain and Buechberg
Accommodation in Tuggen
Tuggen lies between the Linth Plain and Buechberg, a molasse hill on the southeastern shore of Lake Obersee. Open spaces, fields, woodland and rolling hills define the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Tuggen, you can consider whether you would like your stay to focus mainly on nature, trails or the history of the Linth works. The climate is temperate, with warm summers and relatively mild winters.
Landscape and trails around Tuggen
The area is ideal for hiking, walking and cycling. Hiking and cycling trails lead through the Linth Plain and over gentle hills. The Tuggen circular trails also offer a nature experience for visitors of all ages. The Obersee adventure trail offers a different route: it starts at the “Gallusplatz” bus stop in Tuggen and passes through Buechberg towards Grynau and Uznach. The trail includes a treasure hunt with a discovery backpack; check in advance where it is available, as distribution arrangements may change.
For a shorter outing, consider the nature trail near Schrötermoos: its circular route takes about 45 minutes. This approximate duration sets it apart from an excursion that includes the route through Buechberg and its destinations towards Grynau and Uznach. Near Grynau, the Obersee adventure trail crosses the Linth bridge to bathing spots along the Linth. Swimming may be seasonal and subject to local rules; check the conditions on site if you plan to swim there.
Moorland, lakeshore and nature watching
Ammesmoos is a large woodland moor in Buechberg. At its pond, you can observe yellow-bellied toads and, with a little luck, even grass snakes. In Bätzimatt, marshland and reed beds along the lakeshore are protected at cantonal level. Flowers found there include irises and orchids. The area’s natural features thus range from woodland moor to protected lakeshore habitats.
The Linth works and history
Those interested in the history of the landscape can find an open-air museum about the Linth works, flood protection, flora and fauna along the Escher and Linth canals. Steles, information panels and illustrated bunkers present these topics. The Linth works exhibition is housed in a former workshop building of the Linth works, next to the historic Grynau Tower in Tuggen.
Grynau also connects the landscape with military history. The former military fortress has been preserved true to its original form, with equipment from the Second World War, and can be visited by prior arrangement. It is advisable to check the advance booking requirements before planning a visit. The infantry fortress was built in 1940–42 as an advanced position of the 7th Division. Its purpose was to block and protect the Linth bridge at Grynau and Tuggen.
Tuggen has a settlement history dating back to a documented mention in the year 844. The historic parish church and traditional buildings shape the townscape. According to tradition, Columban and Gallus came to Tuggen around 610. A historic building in the town features a medieval structure, a painted hall, plank-beam ceilings, window-seat niches and Gothic sandstone elements; its murals are of regional significance.
Events and getting there
Every spring, the Chromen Festival is held at the Loretto Chapel in Chromen, featuring a solemn church service. Another recurring event is the MC March-Höfe motorcycle blessing: it has been held every year since 1997 on the third Sunday in May at the Betti site in Tuggen. If an event is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.
PostBus route 521 connects the “Tuggen, Grynau” stop with the Uznach and Siebnen-Wangen railway stations in just a few minutes. Check the timetable before travelling so you can plan your journey accordingly.
