The Bucheggberg district lies in the canton of Solothurn and is almost entirely surrounded by the canton of Bern. It stretches along the Bucheggberg range of hills; the Limpach Valley borders it to the southeast and the Aare to the north. Buchegg is the district’s main town. Gentle hills, extensive beech forests, meadows and fields characterise the hiking landscape. Hiking trails, viewpoints and cultural sites offer different focal points for a stay. So if you are looking for a hotel in Bucheggberg, it is worth first choosing the experiences you want to shape your trip.

Hiking and nature

The Bucheggberg circular hike, also known as the Buechibärger circular hike, is a themed trail and part of the Solothurn Forest Hikes. It takes four to five hours and starts and ends at the car park next to Buchegg Castle in Kyburg-Buchegg. This clearly named starting point helps with planning your day; the tour can be considered a longer hiking itinerary. As the access point may change, check local information before travelling.

The SteigrĂĽebli nature reserve also connects the landscape with traces of earlier work. It contains unfinished millstones made of hard Lower Muschelkalk limestone, left behind when production ended about 100 years ago. The site is about a ten-minute walk east of the centre of Schnottwil and can be reached by bicycle or car. Check local access conditions before setting out.

Cycling tours and golf

The “Around Buechibärg” cycling tour offers views of the Alps, the Jura and the Seeland region. A tour in the upper Bucheggberg leads from the Mülital through forests and fields to the Egg viewpoint in Aetigkofen. On a clear day, the Bernese Alps are even visible from there. The first tour brings together several viewpoints; the second focuses on a specific vantage point and the weather-dependent view of the Alps.

Golf is another leisure option: Limpachtal Golf Course has 18 holes and is 6.1 kilometres long. Hole 11 is Switzerland’s only par-6 hole and, at 666 metres, the longest hole in Europe. As course information may change, confirm the details with the operator before your trip.

Culture and history

A local history museum is housed in the tower of Buchegg Castle, with a permanent exhibition on rural domestic culture. Temporary exhibitions explore the cultural heritage of Bucheggberg and the district’s arts and crafts; their themes vary. Check the opening arrangements before visiting.

Religious buildings also offer insight into the district’s history. Mühledorf Reformed Church stands on the site of St Margaret’s Chapel, which was already mentioned in a document in 1338. The small chapel of Balm was originally a medieval Chapel of the Holy Trinity, undoubtedly founded in connection with Balmegg Castle. Its oldest archaeologically verified parts date from the Early Middle Ages. There are 260 steps leading to the chapel of Balm; the lowest section is a field track. Access to the interior must be arranged in advance.

Hubelstein is the largest cup-marked stone in the canton of Solothurn. Fifteen cup marks are visible, arranged in three groups. It provides another point of cultural and historical interest alongside the churches and museum.

Seasonal experiences and market

On a llama trek in Bucheggberg, visitors can hike through nature alongside llamas. If you plan this activity, check the booking details in advance. The seasonal Lüterkofen pumpkin maze features waist-high hedges, a barefoot trail and a stone labyrinth, as well as a competition with a treasure hunt. Check the season’s dates before visiting.

The Messen market is held four times a year. It features products from local businesses and visiting market traders; Messen’s hospitality businesses prepare specialities for market visitors. As the offerings vary with each edition, check the specific market dates before travelling as well.
