Discover Witterswil
Accommodation in Witterswil
Witterswil is a municipality in the Dorneck District of the Canton of Solothurn in Switzerland. Fields, forest and village history give the place several sides; at the same time, a tram connection links it to Basel city centre. When planning your trip, you can focus on enjoying nature, local history or the connection to Basel.
Explore fields, forest and landscape
Witterswil is surrounded by fields and Witterswil Forest. Opportunities for outdoor recreation include walks, sports and spending time in nature. Depending on your interests, you can make your stay more about physical activity or time in the open air.
There is a picnic area in the Binnbach nature reserve. The Forsthaus forest lodge is also a place to relax and spend time together, and has a barbecue area. Facilities and access rules may change, so check them before your visit.
Witterswil is a clustered village in a broad hollow at the foot of the Jura, in the rear Leimental valley and close to the French border. The landscape lies at the transition between the gently rolling hills of the Sundgau and the folded Mesozoic rock strata of the northern Jura. Near the old village centre, a shallow depression opens to the east towards Ettingen; the Marchbach drains it into the Birsig. South of Witterswil, the terrain rises steeply along the slope of Witterswil Mountain. The municipality’s highest point is there, at 500 metres above sea level.
Witterswil and the journey to Basel
Witterswil lies about 9 kilometres as the crow flies south-southwest of Basel. The tram connection takes you to Basel city centre in around 25 minutes. Actual journey time may vary depending on the connection and traffic. The distance is measured as the crow flies, while the minutes refer to the approximate tram journey; if you are planning time in Basel, check the connection for your travel date.
Village history and fountains
Since the Middle Ages, Witterswil was part of the Rotberg lordship, which for a long time held the status of a free imperial fief. This made the village one of the seven free imperial villages on the Blauen. This historical context is part of the village’s history and adds to the picture of its location in the rear Leimental valley.
One visible feature in the village is the natural-stone fountain “auf dem Spielhof” in the upper village. It dates from the 19th century and was restored in 2010. All four of its spouts pour water at the same time. The fountain brings together a specific location in the upper village, its construction history and a readily identifiable architectural detail.
Following completion of the restoration work, Witterswil Church once again welcomes visitors for prayer, quiet reflection and fellowship. For current services, check the parish notices.
Village festivals and traditional events
The village shop festival is held every year in August as a two-day village festival; the exact date may vary. In 2025, the festival celebrated its 25th anniversary. That year, food from FIDI-Burger and Landhuus was offered, along with raclette and a cake buffet. This information relates to the 2025 festival; if you would like to plan your trip around the village shop festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
Carnival is also one of Witterswil’s traditional events. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the latest dates. The Banntag, organised by the citizens’ municipality, is also a regular part of village life. Together, these events showcase different aspects of local life, though they do not share the same character or date.
