Härkingen: Forest, Golf and Local History
Accommodation in Härkingen
Härkingen combines local history with themes relating to forests, nature and exercise. The municipality belongs to the Gäu district and lies 435 metres above sea level. An interactive forest nature trail, the driving range and open training sessions offered by the gymnastics club each focus on different activities. Archaeological traces and local church history add further points of interest. When choosing your stay, the town offers options for nature lovers, sports enthusiasts and those interested in cultural history.
Nature Along the Forest Nature Trail
The interactive forest nature trail is a short circular walk that starts at the forest lodge. Along the way, visitors learn about native tree and shrub species. The trail’s manageable length and focus on native woody plants give the nature theme a concrete setting.
The Härkingen Nature and Bird Conservation Association offers public nature excursions and talks, and also takes care of the forest nature trail. Alongside the walk, this provides additional ways to learn about the environment: the trail introduces tree and shrub species, while the association offers excursions and talks.
The surrounding area is also part of Härkingen’s natural landscape: it includes forests and the southern foothills of the Jura range, which are used for recreation. A specific educational walk and a broader view of the landscape thus offer different ways to experience nature.
Golf and Open Training Sessions
You can try golf at the Härkingen driving range. The facility has six covered and eleven outdoor hitting bays and welcomes both beginners and experienced golfers. You’re welcome even if you don’t have your own clubs. As facility details may change, check the latest information about the driving range before your visit.
TV Härkingen offers open training sessions in trampolining, Zumba Workout and “Mach mit – Blieb Fit” (“Join In – Stay Fit”). The sessions are open to non-members too; check the times separately.
These offer different types of activities to choose from: golf at the driving range, or one of the gymnastics club’s open training sessions. The session times are a separate planning consideration, while the driving range is described in terms of its covered and outdoor hitting bays.
Local History Across Different Periods
Härkingen was first mentioned in a deed of donation issued by Emperor Henry IV in Speyer on 7 December 1080. Archaeological finds add to this written record of local history: Neolithic remains were discovered at Buchenrain, and Roman finds at Grenzweg towards Neuendorf. Together, these attest to early settlement in the municipality.
The Roman Catholic Church of St. John in Härkingen was built in 1754 and is considered a monument of significant art-historical value. A further development in church history followed in 1805, when Härkingen became ecclesiastically independent from Egerkingen and its own parish.
The Fröschenfest has also been held in different years: the 21st edition took place in the village centre on 9 and 10 August 2019, and another edition followed in 2025. These dates offer a glimpse into the festival’s history without implying that it is held annually.
Transport Links and Surroundings
Härkingen is well located for travel, with larger cities reachable from there in a short time.
