The district of Thal is in the canton of Solothurn; Balsthal is its main town. Thal Nature Park is shaped by the Jura chain and the river valleys of DĂĽnnerntal, Guldental and Augstbachtal. Flower-rich hay meadows and species-rich summer pastures provide habitats for numerous orchid species. The open pine and beech forests are also known for their high biodiversity, including rare species.

Between Jura Heights, Forests and Gorges

In Wolf Gorge, a path leads through a narrow gorge between high rock faces with caves and water-worn hollows. The area is a cantonal forest reserve. For just under one and a half kilometres, the path follows the Wolfsbach stream, gaining 300 metres in elevation. The Herbetswil Wolfsschlucht bus stop is right at the entrance. Signposted parking is available in the village centre of Herbetswil; there are additional parking options in Welschenrohr.

The Holzweg Thal offers a different kind of hiking experience, playfully bringing together art, forest and the natural product wood. There are four hiking routes on the Passwang, with varying levels of difficulty. The Hauenstein–Balsthal and Balsthal–Weissenstein stages of the Jura High Trail also cross Thal; the trail is part of SwitzerlandMobility’s nationwide hiking network.

The Nature Park Bus runs from Balsthal via Höngen and Brunnersberg to Restaurant Güggel. Another route goes via Herbetswil, Tannmatt and Hinterer Brandberg, returning to Herbetswil; six mountain inns are served in total. Routes and services are seasonal, so check the details before travelling.

The history of the landscape also offers a special perspective on the Jura: during the ice ages, the Jura heights remained ice-free and served as refuges for Arctic-Alpine animal and plant species. Heat-loving species arrived during the warmer periods that followed; at that time, the Jura was still forest-free.

Castles, Museums and Regional History

Neu-Falkenstein Castle ruins were probably built in the early 12th century. In the 13th and 14th centuries, they served as a fiefdom seat for the Counts of Falkenstein and Bechburg. The ruins are open year-round and offer views of Thal Nature Park, barbecue areas and fire pits. If weather or maintenance affects access, check the details on site. The Tinu von Neu-Falkenstein themed trail shares insights into the ruins and the Middle Ages: at seven stops, Tinu appears on your smartphone. Before planning your visit, check whether the digital service is available.

If you would like to visit several historic buildings on a hike, the one-day Three Castles Hike takes you to Alt-Falkenstein, Alt-Bechburg and Neu-Falkenstein. The Alt-Falkenstein local history museum has a permanent exhibition featuring fossils, archaeological finds, weapons and military memorabilia, ceramics, combs, engravings and a domestic-life display. The museum can only be reached on foot; the climb from Balsthal ThalbrĂĽcke takes about 15 minutes.

The Matzendorf Ceramics Museum presents the 200-year tradition of the Matzendorf ceramics manufactory and the Aedermannsdorf pottery factory. It is open on the first Sunday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; visits outside these hours are possible by appointment. Opening hours may change, so check the details before you travel.

At the uhrundzeit museum in Welschenrohr, a two-storey exhibition showcases more than 250 years of watchmaking in Thal and examples from well over 16 companies originally based there. The museum is located in the premises of the former TECHNOS watch factory. If staffing and visitor arrangements allow, you can watch a watchmaker at work in the museum workshop.

Other collections are dedicated to technology and craftsmanship: the MOTRAC Museum in Welschenrohr displays restored Motrac tractors, Motrac mowers, attachments and other agricultural equipment; opening hours may vary. The historic mill in Ramiswil dates from the 16th century and features a Renaissance façade and old milling equipment.
