Wildhaus combines historic sites, a protected moorland landscape and a range of leisure activities. If you’re looking for hotels in Wildhaus, the things you’re interested in during your stay can help guide your choice of destination. Options include insights into architectural history, viewpoints, summer hiking trails, lakeside activities and places for movement and sound.

Architectural history and castle ruins

The Zwingli House was built in the mid-15th century by the grandfather of the Reformer. The Protestant Church of the Canton of St. Gallen keeps it open to visitors from all over the world. Despite various changes, its basic structure has been preserved to this day. The house thus brings together the story of its origins and traces of later alterations. If you’re interested in historic buildings, the Zwingli House offers a tangible point of reference: its period of construction, its builder from the Reformer’s family history and its preserved basic structure.

At Wildenburg, a metal staircase leads to the remains of the keep. From there, you can enjoy a lovely view. The castle ruins are accessible via a farm road from Schönenbodensee; trail conditions may vary. A small supply of firewood is available at the barbecue area by Wildenburg. This means you can consider the view from the ruins and the practical information about the barbecue area separately when planning your visit.

Schönenbodensee: Moorland and bathing facility

Schönenbodensee lies in a protected moorland landscape. The lake has had a bathing facility with a large jetty since 1930, and pedal boats are also available to rent. The landscape and visitor facilities give the place different points of interest: you can experience the lake as a natural environment or make use of the activities mentioned. Seasonal opening and availability may vary. Before visiting, check whether the bathing facility and pedal boat rentals are available at the time you plan to go.

Summer trails and an alpine cheese dairy in Gamplüt

Gamplüt can be reached by the Gamplüt cable car, one of the world’s first solar-powered gondola lifts. In summer, there are many popular hiking trails with lovely views. Hiking is a summer activity, not a year-round program. Trail conditions may change.

The Gamplüt alpine cheese dairy also offers an insight into local cheese-making. It produces alpine cheese in its own dairy and shows visitors the newly built cheese dairy and the new alpine cowshed. If you’re planning a visit, check the current visitor arrangements. This keeps cheese-making distinct as an activity in its own right from the summer hiking trails.

Leisure activities in Eggewäldli

Eggewäldli has a mini-golf course. The necessary equipment is available for a fee at the Eggewäldli kiosk. The skills park can be used for a voluntary contribution. These different arrangements are relevant when planning: there is a fee for mini-golf equipment, while use of the skills park is supported by a voluntary contribution. The arrangements may change.

The Bike Academy Toggenburg offers riding technique courses for visitors of all ages, bookable from May to October. It’s also worth checking current availability. The curling hall in Eggewäldli has four rinks and offers rink rental, courses, seminars and tournaments; the program and rental options may change. Eggewäldli also has a multi-generational playground, a marble run and a forest playground. There is an indoor playground for bad weather. Use of the playground facilities mentioned is free of charge.

The Toggenburg pump track is located in Munzenriet, opposite the curling center or ice rink.

Sound Trail with 27 stations

The Sound Trail runs from Alp Sellamatt via Iltios to Oberdorf. It can be reached by mountain railways from Wildhaus and Alt St. Johann. Along the route are 27 stations by renowned national and international sound artists. The trail is therefore a different kind of outing from visiting a single viewpoint or an attraction at a fixed location: the stations are spread along the route. As access and seasonal operation of the mountain railways may change, check the current conditions before planning your visit.
