The Werdenberg constituency is an administrative unit of the canton of St. Gallen and forms the Werdenberg region within the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. It takes its name from the medieval town and castle of Werdenberg on Lake Werdenberg. Local history, themed trails and alpine landscapes offer different ways to shape a trip here. If you are looking for a hotel in Werdenberg, you can start planning by deciding whether you would most like to experience the historic townscape, a themed trail or the mountain landscape.

Historic Town and Castle on Lake Werdenberg

The medieval town of Werdenberg is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National Importance as a site of national importance and is considered Switzerland’s oldest timber-built settlement. Its picturesque market square, with its arcades, shapes the historic townscape. The Schlangenhaus is also a particularly valuable historic building; its Baroque painted decoration gives it a distinctive character. There are restaurants and cafés in and around the town.

Werdenberg Castle stands 45 metres above the valley floor and offers views across the Rhine Valley to the Alps. As a museum, it represents 800 years of social history. An audio-guide and stereoscope tour explores the castle. From April to October, walks, guided tours and workshops bring to life the patriarchal rule of the castle and the austere lives of its subjects in the town.

Historic Places in the Region

Other stops tell stories of different eras and ways of life. The Hohensax Castle ruins were built around 1200 and lie on the Rheintaler Höhenweg. The Walserhaus Palfris dates from the 14th century and is a well-preserved part of Walser heritage. In Grabs, the centuries-old Grabser Mühlbach recalls the area’s former commercial use: a signposted trail with information boards traces its history. Guided tours can be booked through Werdenberg Tourism.

Magletsch Artillery Fort is a military-history site built during the Second World War; visits are possible by appointment. Sennwald Hammer Mill combines a museum with courses, guided tours and demonstrations. Cultural visits therefore range from historic buildings and sites to activities focused on crafts and history.

Hiking Trails with Distinct Themes

The Sevelen Gorge Trail is a nature trail of about 3.5 kilometres that forms a loop. Information boards cover glacial potholes and wildlife. You can start the loop at the Glat car park or from the village centre by the civil defence facility. The TrĂĽbliweg offers a different focus: this hike of about 1.5 hours includes nine information stops about grapes, vines and wine, as well as an SMS quiz on wine.

For a longer outing, a 9.9-kilometre hike crosses the wider Werdenberg region from Wartau via Buchs to the medieval town of Werdenberg. The route provides access to the Werdenberg museums, including Werdenberg Castle and the Schlangenhaus. Another option with published time and elevation figures is the Margelchopf summit trail: the hike is 11 kilometres long, takes 4 hours and 35 minutes, and involves 900 metres of ascent. It leads over meadows and alpine pastures to a grassy high plateau overlooking the St. Gallen Rhine Valley. In terms of time required, the approximately 1.5-hour TrĂĽbliweg is a much shorter alternative to this considerably longer mountain hike.

Lake, Moorland and Seasonal Experiences

Lake Voralp lies at an elevation of 1,123 metres in Grabs, surrounded by alpine pastures and forests. A walking path circles the natural lake; swimming is possible in summer. The landscape of Gamperfin raised bog can be explored on well-maintained paths. To comply with conservation regulations, visitors must stay on the designated paths.

The bird of prey park outside Buchs offers flight shows and guided park tours at 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from April to the end of October. As this is a seasonal offering, it is advisable to check the date before visiting. Events also add to the cultural programme: the Schlossmediale Werdenberg takes place every year at Whitsun and focuses on early and contemporary music and audiovisual art over ten days. The annual, family-friendly slowUp Werdenberg-Liechtenstein uses car-free main roads through Werdenberg and Liechtenstein; event dates vary from year to year.
