Uzwil combines trails through several villages with riverside landscapes, distinctive buildings and opportunities to enjoy art, sport and regional products. If you are looking for a hotel in Uzwil, these different highlights can help you plan your stay around your interests: follow a route through the surrounding area, explore the history of the buildings or visit the gourmet market.
Trails and landscapes around Uzwil
The 10-Villages Trail runs around and partly through a total of ten villages in the municipalities of Uzwil and Oberuzwil. It consists of a main trail and three shorter spur trails. The landscapes along the Thur and Glatt rivers lie along the route; on Eppenberg, the trail offers panoramic views. The combination of villages, riverside landscapes and viewpoints gives you several options when planning a route.
The Thur Route offers a different way to explore the area: it consists of three stages that are well suited to day trips. The second stage covers 53 kilometres from Bischofszell via Uzwil and BĂĽtschwil to Nesslau. The Thur runs alongside the route throughout, shaping the landscape. By contrast, the 10-Villages Trail passes through the villages in the municipalities of Uzwil and Oberuzwil. The two options therefore differ primarily in their routes and the stages described.
The Vogelsberg area is a local recreation and leisure area, used extensively by joggers, mountain bikers and walkers. The Vita Parcours is located in the Vogelsberg forest, where you can discover mighty Douglas firs at various points. The Uze is also part of the local landscape: in Uzwil and Niederuzwil, it has been extensively restored to a more natural state, enhancing the built-up area today. A recommended detour to the Uze starts on Birkenstrasse and crosses the two wooden bridges, Widenweg and Rankweg.
Views of the Thur and its bridges
To see the Thur waterfall at Felsegg, follow the Henau–Brübach route. The Thur Bridge, known as the Brübacherbrücke, offers a direct view of the sparkling water. At Gigerrain, the landscape also tells the story of its own formation: the Thur’s outer bank was created by continual erosion caused by the force of the river. For the best view of the outer bank, turn off the Henau–Zuzwil route towards Gillhof.
The design of the Felsegg Thur Bridge is another point of interest for anyone interested in engineering. It is a three-hinged arch bridge with an arch span of 72 metres. The Maillart Bridge, meanwhile, was built in 1933/34 as part of the state road at the time, a concrete road; its builder was Robert Maillart. The two bridges thus represent different structures and historical contexts.
Architectural heritage, art and local products
The Niederuzwil granary is a two-storey block construction. An inscription on the granary dates its construction to 1619; it was restored in the 1980s and moved to its current location. Henau is home to the church tower, considered the oldest monument in the municipality of Uzwil and protected by the federal government. Villa WaldbĂĽhl is listed in the Swiss Federal Inventory of Cultural Property of National Significance.
The Galerie am Gleis brings things up to date: it gives artists the opportunity to present their work to the public and works to shape public spaces through art. Alongside its historic buildings, Uzwil therefore also offers a connection to public art.
The Uzwil gourmet market takes place every Friday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at Lindenring in the centre of Uzwil. Fresh regional products are on offer, and visitors can also get to know the people behind the market stalls. If the market is part of your plans, you can take its regular hours into account when choosing the day of your visit.
Sports and getting around
In Uzwil, boccia is played both for fun and competitively. The Boccia Club Uzwil hall has two courts. Curling is also played in Uzwil: the sz immo curling hall Uzwil, home of the Curling Club Uzwil, has four rinks. These details offer a concrete overview of the two sports and the facilities described.
For travel planning, Uzwil is located on the St. Gallen–Winterthur SBB railway line. Uzwil station, which opened in 1855, is in the municipality and is jointly operated by the municipalities of Uzwil and Oberuzwil. The road network also helps locate the town: Cantonal Road No. 38, also known as Main Road 444, runs from the cantonal border between Bischofszell and Niederbüren via Niederuzwil and Uzwil to Oberuzwil. Cantonal Road No. 54 connects Niederuzwil with Flawil; No. 119 runs from Henau via the Maillart Bridge to Zuzwil.
