Discover Castro: Blenio Valley, mountain biking and culture
Accommodation in Castro
Castro between the Blenio Valley and Acquarossa
If you are looking for a hotel in Castro, you can get a sense of the destination through its landscape, mountain biking and cultural history. Castro lies in the Blenio district of the canton of Ticino, at an altitude of 651 metres above sea level. From Castro, there are impressive views up the Blenio Valley towards Olivone. The village’s administrative history also shapes its name: until 3 April 2004, Castro was an independent municipality. On 4 April 2004, it merged with Corzoneso, Dongio, Largario, Leontica, Lottigna, Marolta, Ponto Valentino and Prugiasco to form the municipality of Acquarossa. Today, Castro is a hamlet of Acquarossa.
Mountain biking routes and the Castro plain
The BlenioBike 21 – Ponto Valentino mountain biking route is 17.6 kilometres long, climbs 818 metres and takes 2 hours and 25 minutes. Its distance, ascent and duration give you concrete figures for planning your day. As published route data may be revised, check it again before setting out. On the return to Acquarossa, BlenioBike 21 follows a side road through the Castro plain.
BlenioBike 19 – San Carlo can be understood primarily through its described route: from Ponto Valentino, a simple mule track takes you to the Castro plain. It crosses the Brenno and then heads south along the old Satro gravel road. The plain is therefore a reference point in both route descriptions: on BlenioBike 19, on the way from Ponto Valentino, and on BlenioBike 21, on the return to Acquarossa. The description and route of BlenioBike 19 may change; check the route conditions before setting out.
Cultural sites and history
The Chiesa di San Giorgio was founded in 1205. The parish church building, erected in 1867, stands outside the settlement centre and is rarely used; access may depend on arrangements with the parish. Mass is held monthly at the Oratorio di Sant’Antonio da Padova. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the parish information beforehand. The Casa dei Landfogti is located in Castro at Via Sant’Antonio 9.
The Atelier Genucchi preserves plaster works, sculptures, drawings and letters from Giovanni Genucchi’s creative circle, as well as natural materials such as wood and stones collected in nature. Genucchi lived in Castro for many years. From the outdoor area of the atelier, visitors can view his works through horizontal openings at three different points. These outdoor views may change; check the current situation before your visit.
As a thematic complement, the Scopri Acquarossa portal, initiated by the municipality of Acquarossa, documents the area through video interviews, readings and photographs. It offers insights into the present and past life of the area. Alongside information about the village and routes, you can therefore include cultural perspectives on Castro and the wider Acquarossa area in your travel plans.
