Lottigna is a village in the municipality of Acquarossa in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It lies in the heart of the Blenio Valley, 678 metres above sea level, on the eastern bank of the Brenno and at the foot of Mount Simano. Lottigna was once the main settlement in the valley. The river, valley and mountain form the landscape, while Lottigna’s former role as the main settlement adds a historical dimension to its geographical setting. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Lottigna, you might first consider whether you are mainly interested in the village’s cultural sites or also in hiking trails at the municipal and valley level.

Churches and architectural history

The Chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo has been documented since the 13th century. The Romanesque church’s surviving features include the bell tower in the northwest, two single-arched windows on the south side and a fragment of a painted frieze on the right-hand wall of the nave.

The building was raised in 1632, when the choir and side chapels were also added. These are two distinct milestones in its architectural history: the early documentation points to its long ecclesiastical history, while the later work marks a significant change to the building. The Chiesa can therefore be understood not only through its surviving Romanesque features but also through a later expansion.

The Oratorio di Santa Maria in Terzeghin is also known as the Oratorio di S. Pellegrino e della Beata Vergine Immacolata. The building as it appears today dates from 1785. It is classified as a cultural property of local interest, and this protected status is in force. The date refers to the visible building, while the classification describes its protected status.

The Museo storico etnografico Valle di Blenio is housed in a monumental 16th-century palazzo built on older walls dating from 1461. The visitor address is Via al Museo di Blenio 9, 6716 Lottigna.

Hiking trails in the municipality and valley

The Via Francisca del Lucomagno leads towards Lottigna and the Palazzo dei Landfogti, which houses the Museo della Valle di Blenio. This route reference is more specific than the information about the trail networks: it names Lottigna and a particular cultural destination, while the kilometre figures describe larger hiking areas—the municipality and the valley.

At the municipal level, Acquarossa has 65 km of hiking trails. In the Blenio Valley, a well-marked network of 500 km of trails runs through forests and high-altitude pastures. The lower valley has easy routes that are accessible for almost the whole year. The figures cover different areas—the municipal area on the one hand and the Blenio Valley on the other—while the information about the lower-valley routes describes their easy nature and almost year-round accessibility. The stated lengths may change over time.
