Chironico combines a bouldering area with a historic village quarter, where medieval buildings and church art provide a cultural focus. There is also a permanent orienteering course. This gives you different options when planning your trip: outdoor activity, architectural history or a hike across the Piatto pass.

Bouldering and Orienteering

Chironico is home to Area Boulder Chironico (6747 Chironico), an outdoor climbing and bouldering facility. Hundreds of boulders lie in a chestnut forest in the bouldering area, where beginners and experienced climbers can test their skills. The boulders were deposited on the Chironico plateau about 11,000 years ago as a result of a massive landslide. The terrain in the bouldering area is relatively flat, and paths make it easier to get around.

The bouldering area has more than 2,000 boulder problems in a compact space, with relatively short paths between them. Conditions vary by season: spring and autumn often offer pleasant temperatures for bouldering. In winter, friction may be better, while the weather is less predictable; in summer, friction is less favourable in the higher temperatures. Check local conditions before climbing.

Chironico also has a permanent orienteering course with easy, intermediate and difficult routes. The bouldering area and the orienteering course offer different sporting experiences: bouldering focuses on boulders and climbing, while the orienteering course is divided into three levels of difficulty.

Historic Village Quarter and Buildings

The historic village quarter is centred around the original passageway, which is not the same as the present-day road. Chironico also has numerous timber houses built using the block construction method, typical of the Leventina. In the village centre stands the well-preserved Torre dei Pedrini, a six-storey medieval building about 18 metres high. It was built from local stone in the 13th century. Inside the tower is a 15th-century fresco of the Madonna and Child. The Cappella dei Santi Ambrogio e Maurizio is documented from 1227.

Church Architecture

The Chiesa di S. Maurizio has a single-nave barrel-vaulted nave in the Neo-Baroque style. Its main altar is made of marble and dates from the 19th century. The four side chapels contain scagliola altar fronts by Giuseppe Maria Pancaldi, dating from 1766. A single-nave church has one main nave; a barrel vault is a curved ceiling running lengthwise. Scagliola refers to a craft technique used to create marble-like surfaces.

Hike across Piatto

The hike from Chironico to Sonogno, or in the opposite direction, crosses the Piatto pass. It adds a hike between the two destinations mentioned to the activities available in the village. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out.
