Discover Piotta
Accommodation in Piotta
Piotta is a village in the Leventina district of the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. For travelers looking for a hotel, the village offers a distinctive connection to the Ritom funicular railway and the history of hydropower. The railway is both a means of transport to the alpine lake region of Val Piora and an attraction in its own right. Its highlights range from a technical journey into the mountains to historic houses along the cantonal road.
The Ritom Railway and Mountain Lakes
The Ritom funicular railway has a maximum gradient of 87.8%; the journey takes 12 minutes. Along the way, it offers views across the valley floor, Alta Leventina and the surrounding mountains. Its gradient, journey time and views make the ride an attraction in its own right, not just a means of transport to Val Piora.
Lake Ritom can be reached by funicular. With an area of 1.49 km², it is the largest mountain lake in the canton of Ticino. In the wider area around Piotta, Val Piora is known for its alpine lakes, mountains and nature-focused trails. When planning a trip, the railway’s technical character meets the landscape of the region.
Hydropower and Technical History
Since the first dam was built in 1917, the water of Lake Ritom has been used to generate hydropower. It plays a vital role for the Leventina Valley. The use of the lake thus adds a technical and economic history to the landscape, which can also be seen at the facility next to the valley station.
The Ritom hydropower plant is housed in a historic building dating from 1921, next to the funicular’s valley station. The facility includes four Pelton turbines, a total nominal flow rate of 6.7 m³/s and an installed capacity of 44 MW. The funicular is also part of the region’s technical heritage: since 2011, it has been listed in the Swiss inventory of cableways considered technical monuments and part of the country’s cultural heritage. Guided visits to the hydropower plant are organized for groups; check current booking options in advance.
Climate as a Guide to When to Travel
For the 1991–2020 climate normal period, Piotta’s annual mean temperature is 8.1 °C. Based on monthly mean temperatures, January is the coldest month at −1.2 °C and July the warmest at 17.7 °C. On average, around 121 frost days and 20 ice days can also be expected each year. Long-term averages help compare the seasons, but do not reflect the specific weather on a particular travel day.
Educational Trail and Guided Visits
The educational trail at Lake Ritom leads from the dam along a flat path on the left-hand slope of the valley through Val Piora to the Centro Biologia Alpina. Along the way, it provides historical and natural history information. As trail conditions can vary seasonally, check them before your visit.
The Centro Biologia Alpina offers groups and school classes a guided walk along the educational trail, including a visit to the laboratory. The total duration is about three to four hours. Allow time for this and check current booking options and availability in advance.
Houses and Architectural History in Piotta
Well-preserved Case del Gottardo dating from the 17th century stand along the cantonal road. They add a historic accent to the village’s streetscape. The Filarmonia Piotta is a low-rise building with a flat roof that was formerly used as a Coop store. The building of the social dairy and cheese-making facility is also part of the local architectural history: it is low-rise and has a gabled roof. These different building types complement Piotta’s technical character with traces of everyday and community life in the village.
