Ascona lies on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, with the town center right by the lake. In the old town, winding lanes lead to a car-free lakeside promenade lined with cafés. This connects the town center with clear views of the water. When choosing what to explore, art, historic buildings and activities on the lake each offer a different focus, without losing sight of what makes Ascona distinctive.

Lakeside, Monte VeritĂ  and trails

Monte VeritĂ  is a prominent landmark in the landscape around Ascona. The mountain is 321 meters high and offers panoramic views of the village and Lake Maggiore. Two estimated walking times are given, depending on the starting point: about 15 minutes from Ascona and around 30 minutes from the center. The second estimate varies according to the starting point and conditions. The park on Monte VeritĂ  is open to visitors year-round; individual facilities may have their own opening hours. If you would like to combine your visit with a museum, check its hours separately.

The Percorso delle sculture offers a different focus: it is an easy forest walk where you can encounter wooden sculptures. Alongside the panoramic views, a walk through the forest is an experience in its own right. Ascona’s history offers another perspective across time: what was once a fishing village later became a spa town.

Art collections and architectural history

The Museo Comunale d’Arte Moderna Ascona is located on Via Borgo in a palazzo dating from the late 16th century. The municipal collection was established in 1922 with works donated by artists who came to Ascona. It also includes the collection of the Fondazione Marianne Werefkin, with around 90 paintings and 170 sketchbooks. Since parts of the collection may be displayed on a rotating basis, it is worth checking which works are currently on view before visiting. The building, the collection’s history and its artworks each offer a distinct perspective on the town’s cultural history.

Following careful restoration, Castello San Materno now houses the Alten family’s art collection. It comprises more than 40 works by artists from the German-speaking world, created from the late 19th century through the period after the First World War. The collection is open to the public; check the opening hours before your visit. Comparing the two collections can help you appreciate the different themes and periods represented in Ascona’s art offerings.

The parish church of SS. Pietro e Paolo also brings together several historical layers. The building dates from the 16th century and stands on the site of a 14th-century oratory. The church is located on a small square in the old town center. Among its artworks is a large altarpiece on the marble altar by Gabriele Longhi, dating from 1786: Giovanni Serodine painted the panel as early as 1630. These different dates refer to different parts of the furnishings and show how architectural and art history come together in one place.

Activities on Lake Maggiore

Surfing, sailing and other water sports are available on Lake Maggiore from Ascona. Providers and seasonal availability may vary, so check the specific options if you plan to book an activity. Boat trips are also available on Lake Maggiore. Routes and timetables vary by season and should be checked in advance. This makes it easy to consider water sports and boat trips as distinct ways to enjoy the lake, separate from the trails and cultural sites in the town center.

To decide how you would like to experience Ascona, consider these differences: the lakeside promenade and lanes shape the town center, Monte Verità brings together a park, views and a museum, while the collections offer specific insights into art history. You can plan your stay around whichever focus interests you most—lake, walks or culture.
