Gerra between the lakeshore and the hillside

Gerra is located in the municipality of Gambarogno, in the Locarno District of the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. The settlement developed on the Gerra river delta and along the shore of Lake Maggiore. Gerra is mainly divided into three village centers and districts: Riva, Scimiana, and Ronco. Ronco is the old settlement on the hillside; from there, the view extends across the entire lake basin and the Gulf of Ascona. Gerra thus brings together the lakeshore, village centers, and a hillside setting.

Gerra can be reached by train and, during the summer, by boat. Check the relevant timetables for your travel dates. A temporary tourist landing stage at Gerra Gambarogno provides direct access to the lido by water.

Hikes for different time frames

The Sentiero degli Oratori runs from Scaiano or Fosano and can be walked in either direction and in stages. At just over 11 kilometers long and with a walking time of at least four hours, it is a longer hike. From S. Abbondio, the trail reaches Gerra through the forest; along the way, it offers panoramic views over the lake. After entering the historic village center, it passes the Chiesa dei Santi Rocco e Sebastiano. From Gerra, the trail climbs along the Cappelle route toward Ronco.

Another hike leads from San Nazzaro via Monti di Gerra to Gerra Gambarogno. Monti di Gerra is a district with typical stone houses; the hike can be reached by public transport. Those comparing walking times will find a shorter stated time frame on the Tra monti e lago educational trail: the Dirinella–San Nazzaro section is rated easy, is 7.5 kilometers long, and takes about three hours. The Sentiero degli Oratori is estimated to take at least four hours. This makes it possible to distinguish between the two time estimates when planning, without treating the routes as the same.

The Tra monti e lago educational trail

Tra monti e lago connects Dirinella with the Cadenazzo FFS railway station. The educational trail features about forty themed panels on the historical, cultural, and ecological heritage of the area it crosses. Its route offers views of the Gerra delta. Near Gerra, one panel covers the development of the local population and built-up area.

Other content explores how the landscape was used in the past: residents mainly used plots on the Maggia delta at Saleggi in Ascona to produce hay. The educational trail also explains that farmers transported manure across the lake to Saleggi to fertilize their plots. The route thus connects views of the delta with the history of how it was used.

Churches, oratories, and art

The parish church of Santi Rocco e Sebastiano was built in 1744 and extended in 1898/99. Its classical-Baroque layout includes a single-nave interior, side chapels, a square presbytery, and a semicircular apse. Along Gerra’s Way of the Cross toward Ronco, bronze reliefs by the artist Mellmann reflect the connection between the route and sacred art. The Way of the Cross leads to an old oratory where remarkable frescoes can be seen.

The Oratorio del Crocifisso, also known as the Oratorio di S. Bernardino, was founded in 1485 and later extended several times. Its furnishings include 15th-century fresco fragments featuring three Madonnas and several saints. They are attributed to Antonio da Tradate and his workshop. A 17th-century crucifix shows the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernardino on either side; it may come from the workshop of Alessandro Gorla.

Lido on Lake Maggiore

Papaya Beach is a public lido on Lake Maggiore in the center of Gerra Gambarogno. It offers about 4,000 square meters of beach area and a raft. As seasonal operating details and facility information may change, check the latest information before your visit. Together with the hiking trails and historical sites, the lido offers another perspective on the different attractions Gerra has to offer when planning a trip.
