Minusio on Lake Maggiore
Accommodation in Minusio
Minusio is located on Lake Maggiore in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland, between the lake and Cardada. The town offers various options to consider when choosing a hotel: walks along the shore, routes through the municipality and stories that can be read in its historic buildings. Consider whether you want the lakeside landscape or cultural history to be the focus of your stay. These themes can be explored separately: some offerings take you through the region, while others tell the stories of individual buildings and their past.
Lakeside and local trails
The natural lakeshore at Rivapiana is used for cooling off in summer and for walks during the rest of the year. A popular walking and cycling path runs along the lakeshore through the municipality of Minusio. Using the shore and getting around on foot or by bike are two different ways to experience the landscape. As conditions on the shore and trails can change, check the current situation before visiting or setting off on a hike.
The Scopri Minusio tour takes you through the region and its history. At each stop, local features and sights are explained. The Roccabella trail offers another link to the past: it reopened in 2018, and properties of great historical significance can be found along the route. Some of these properties may be private. Before hiking, check current trail conditions and respect private property.
River landscapes and seasonal activities
Part of the Navegna River has been restored to a more natural state. Ponds are intended to encourage fish to migrate upstream; willows planted along the banks slow the flow of water and reduce erosion. These measures give the river its own ecological dimension alongside the use of the lakeshore.
The Roggia Molinara also tells a story of past work with water: its current was used to grind grain, crush flax and hemp, saw wood and power a hammer. Chestnuts can still be gathered in Minusio, particularly in the forests of Mondacce. Gathering is seasonal; check local permits and conditions in advance.
Buildings and cultural history
The Sanctuarium Artis Elisarion officially opened in 1927. In 1939, a circular room was added to house Kuppfer’s circular painting “Il Chiaro Mondo dei Beati.” The Centro Elisarion underwent extensive renovations in 2022 to meet fire-safety and accessibility requirements for people with disabilities; the original structure was preserved. The Clarity movement was founded in 1911 by Elisà r von Kupffer and Eduard von Mayer. The archive devoted to the two men at the museum can be visited by appointment.
The history and architectural changes of the Church of San Quirico date from different periods: the church dates back to the 13th century, acquired its Baroque style in the 18th century and still features remnants of Roman paintings. The bell tower beside the church was originally a watchtower.
Cà di Ferro was built in 1558 and was formerly used as a barracks for mercenaries and as a warehouse. In 1997, it was added to the register of cultural assets of the canton of Ticino. In its park stands the “Cappella della Madonna dei Sette Dolori,” built between 1629 and 1630. Villa La Baronata is also associated with a historical figure: it once served as a hideout for the revolutionary Mikhail Alexandrovich Bakunin. Together, these places reveal different aspects of the town’s history, from religious architecture to the former uses of individual buildings.
