Orselina: Madonna del Sasso and Cardada
Accommodation in Orselina
Orselina lies above Locarno on a mountainside overlooking Lake Maggiore. The village combines the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary with art and religious history; the cable car to Cardada also departs from here. When planning your stay, you can choose between cultural visits and excursions into the mountain landscape.
Madonna del Sasso: Pilgrimage, Art and History
The Madonna del Sasso sanctuary stands on a rocky outcrop above Locarno. From the forecourt, the view extends into a deeply carved valley. As a place of pilgrimage, Madonna del Sasso is considered the best-known in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. The complex was founded in 1480 by the Franciscan friar Bartolomeo da Ivrea. It includes the Church of the Annunciation, the Via Crucis and the sanctuary.
The Via Crucis begins on the old access road from Locarno and climbs through a natural landscape featuring chapels and works of art to the sanctuary. Those interested in the history of the complex can visit the Museo della Madonna del Sasso, with an exhibition spread across eight rooms on two floors. Drawings, prints and historical photographs tell the story of the site.
The museum holds the richest collection of painted votive tablets in the Canton of Ticino; most date from the 19th and 20th centuries. The complex also includes the Museo Casa del Padre, which preserves artifacts from the religious life associated with the sanctuary and monastery. The monastery library in Orselina holds about 14,000 volumes from four historic book collections, including around 500 editions from the 16th century and 33 incunabula. Library materials can be consulted on site.
Individual works in the churches also invite visitors to focus on particular details. In the first side chapel on the left in the Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta is Antonio Ciseri’s oil painting on canvas, «Trasporto di Cristo al sepolcro», from 1864 to 1870. In the south aisle of the Madonna del Sasso church, you can see Bramantinos’s panel painting «Fuga in Egitto» from 1520.
Cardada and Cimetta: Views and Geology
From Orselina, above the sanctuary, the cable car travels to Cardada at 1,340 metres above sea level. It covers the 1,000-metre ascent in five minutes. Check the timetable before your trip if you plan to take the cable car.
In Cardada, a granite-paved path leads up into the treetops and ends at a suspended viewing platform. From there, the panorama over Lake Maggiore, the Centovalli and parts of the Maggia Valley spans a 180-degree field of view. On Cimetta, the geological observatory is located at the highest point. Its sweeping view takes in the entire region and the surrounding mountains. Information panels explain the Insubric Line and the rock types of the two tectonic plates. The platform in Cardada and the observatory on Cimetta therefore offer different views and subjects.
Trails and Activities in Cardada
Cardada has two official Helsana Nordic walking routes. Three marked trails, graded by difficulty, are available for snowshoeing. Mountain trails from Cardada and Cimetta lead to Cima della Trosa and Madone. These options include a range of activities, and not all trails have the same level of difficulty.
Mountain bikers can also follow a described route: Trail 397 starts at Alpe Cardada, descends through Val Resa to Brione sopra Minusio and continues back to Orselina. If you prefer to travel on foot, you can choose the mountain trails or the two Nordic walking routes; the mountain trails lead to Cima della Trosa and Madone.
Families can go on a treasure hunt in Cardada: clues on a map lead along a nature trail, and the map is available at the cable car ticket office. The inclusive playground in Cardada is designed for children with and without disabilities to play together. Unlike the trails and viewpoints, its focus is on providing a place for shared play.
Getting to the Sanctuary and Practical Information
You can reach the Madonna del Sasso sanctuary by climbing for about 20 minutes through the ravine of the Torrente Ramogno, or by taking the funicular west of Locarno railway station. The funicular to the sanctuary and the cable car from Orselina to Cardada are separate connections. Check the timetable for the relevant service before your trip.
A lifting platform close to the Ristorante della Funicolare in Orselina makes it easier for some wheelchair users with a Eurokey to access the church. If you require assistance, contact the sanctuary directly in advance. The stations on the Orselina–Cardada cable car were designed to be easily accessible to older people, people with disabilities, wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. Check the specific conditions before travelling.
If you are looking for a hotel in Orselina, you can plan your trip around whether you would prefer to explore the history of the pilgrimage and the works of art, or the views and trails in Cardada and Cimetta. The cultural sites and mountain activities give your stay different points of focus.
