Sonogno: Village History and Wool Craft
Accommodation in Sonogno
Sonogno is a locality in the municipality of Verzasca in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The well-preserved village center, with its characteristic houses and lanes, defines the place. Together with the Museo di Val Verzasca and the Casa della Lana, it offers different ways to explore local history and crafts. If you choose a destination for village culture, wool processing and outdoor activities, Sonogno offers several clearly distinct themes.
Historic Village Center and Local Traditions
In the upper part of the historic village center, a mural depicting the Last Judgment adorns a rustic house. The artist is unknown; the work dates from the 18th century. It adds a specific example of historical visual art in the village to its houses and lanes.
Not far from the village square stands the old bread oven, which is still in use today. Bread-making is therefore not only part of the village’s history but is also linked to an ongoing practice.
Museum and Wool Crafts
The Museo di Val Verzasca is located at the start of the road that runs through Sonogno and continues into Val Redorta. Its exhibition explores the history of the chimney sweep children in the Verzasca Valley and children’s rights. The museum offers guided tours of about 1.5 hours in Italian, German, French or English. The approximate duration and the languages offered can help you fit a museum visit into your schedule.
Wool processing is also part of life in Sonogno. During tours offered by Pro Verzasca, visitors learn how wool is processed, from shearing through carding and dyeing to spinning. At Casa della Lana, craftswomen make handcrafted products from sheep’s wool and offer spinning classes. This gives you an insight into both the individual stages of the process and spinning as a course topic in its own right.
Casa della Lana also offers a simple felting workshop for school groups. It is suitable for children from the third year of primary school onwards and takes place under the supervision of the class teacher. This format is specifically designed for school groups, making it distinct from the wool-processing tours.
Routes and Seasonal Activities
The Alta Verzasca Bike mountain biking route, Route 399, runs from Brione Verzasca to Sonogno. The village is therefore the destination of this route. When there is enough snow, there are two cross-country skiing options of different lengths: a blue trail about 500 meters long, south of the village near the municipal parking lot, and a red trail approximately 5 kilometers long, running along Val Redorta. Both options depend on sufficient snow cover; check the conditions before including them in your plans.
In a broader landscape context, Valle Verzasca is a mountain valley featuring the Verzasca River, smooth, polished gorges and pools that invite visitors to swim in summer.
