Contra is a village in the municipality of Tenero-Contra in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. The hilly area offers views of Lake Maggiore. If you are looking for a hotel in Tenero-Contra, you can base your choice on your travel interests: Is a particular tour, nature observation, or cultural history your main priority?

Choosing a trail: panoramic route or circular trail

La Collina Alta is an easy panoramic trail from Locarno Monti to Contra, offering views of Lake Maggiore. The route description ends in Contra, Paese. The Contra-Alpe Cardada Trail differs in its format: it is a fully marked circular trail for trail running. It starts in Contra, opposite the town hall and the Church of San Bernardo. The two routes therefore have different defining features: La Collina Alta is characterized by the route from Locarno Monti to Contra and its panoramic views, while the Contra-Alpe Cardada Trail is defined by its circular route and full marking for trail running.

The Contra, Paese stop can be reached by bus from Tenero station on line B 323 or from Locarno station on line B 312. As bus routes and stop arrangements may change, check the timetable before your trip.

Forest scenery and possible wildlife encounters

The forest area in Tenero-Contra has become a place for recreation and connecting with nature. Hikers on forest trails may encounter roe deer, red deer, wild boar, and foxes; however, sightings are not guaranteed. The mountainous area of Tenero-Contra is particularly forested between the village of Falò and the municipal boundaries of Brione s.M. and Mergoscia. The Patriziato di Contra owns several properties there.

The area's history also includes its former wood supply: wood was once transported from the upper mountains down to the village of Contra using a system of cable installations. This historical use adds another perspective to the forest area, one clearly rooted in the past.

Churches and architectural history in Contra

The Church of San Bernardo Abate in Contra stands on medieval masonry. Its wall paintings date from the second half of the 15th century. Significant work on the building in the 17th century included the Rosary Chapel in 1605, the sacristy before 1669, and the bell tower in 1682. The medieval masonry, 15th-century wall paintings, and later construction work reveal the church's different historical layers.

San Bernardo Abate is designated as a locally protected cultural property under inventory number A1087 in the Inventory of Cultural Property of the Canton of Ticino. The church is also considered a protected cultural monument under Article 35, paragraph 2, of the implementing provisions for the land-use plan of the municipality of Tenero-Contra.

Another testament to the area's history is the Oratorio della Beata Vergine della Fraccia in Contra. Its origins lie in a votive tabernacle to the Virgin Mary erected around 1636. The men of Contra built the oratory around 1640–1645. The tabernacle's earlier origins and the oratory's somewhat later construction can thus be distinguished as two successive stages in its history.
