Vairano: Hiking Trails, Botanical Diversity and History
Accommodation in Vairano
Vairano is situated on a terrace 199 metres above the left bank of Lake Maggiore and 392 metres above sea level. There are several options to focus on when planning your trip: hiking trails, botanical collections and traces of the town’s history. The trails vary in route and theme; looking at their individual features can help you plan your stay around your interests.
Hiking: Sentiero degli Oratori and Tra monti e lago
The Sentiero degli Oratori is just over 11 kilometres long. From Vairano, the route first follows the road and then takes a path above the Botanical Garden to Piazzogna. You can walk the trail in either direction and complete it in individual stages. If you prefer to divide your hike into sections, this offers an alternative to walking the entire route.
The Tra monti e lago educational trail has a different focus. Its Vairano–Contone section features educational panels that provide information about the historical, cultural and ecological heritage, as well as other distinctive features, of the Gambarogno area. Another section of this educational trail, San Nazzaro–Magadino, climbs uphill to Vairano. The two trails therefore differ in what they offer: the Sentiero is notable for its length and the option of walking it in stages or in either direction, while Tra monti e lago provides information about the area along the way.
Botanical Diversity and Panoramic Views
The Parco Botanico del Gambarogno is located in Vairano and covers more than 20,000 square metres. Its collection includes around 950 different varieties of camellia. Citrus plants are also represented: the citrus collection is considered one of the most important in Europe. Other botanical rarities round out the collection.
The park offers panoramic views of the lake, the Maggia Delta and the mountains beyond. Here, two different interests come together: plant diversity and views of the landscape. If botanical highlights are more important to you than a hiking stage when planning your trip, the garden is a natural point of interest for your stay.
Oratory, Viewpoint and Local History
The present-day Oratorio di San Rocco is a 17th-century building. It stands on the site of a medieval predecessor oratory. Casa Tosi has a viewpoint of medieval origin. Vairano is also home to the Madonna del Rosario fresco, depicting two saints.
The town’s political history also puts its past in context. Vairano was once an independent political municipality. In 1930, it merged with Casenzano to form San Nazzaro; in 2010, San Nazzaro became part of the municipality of Gambarogno. Together with its buildings and works of art, this offers insight into different aspects of local history: the development of the municipality, a medieval predecessor site and works of art found in Vairano.
