If you are looking for a hotel in Vergeletto, you can choose where to stay based on two specific interests: hiking trails in the valley and the history of the mills and Farina Bóna. Vergeletto lies in the upper part of the Valle di Vergeletto, a side valley of the Valle Onsernone; the Ribo flows through the valley. Hiking routes differ in their course and destination, from the trail to Lago d'Alzasca to routes starting at Alpe Salei. This lets you plan your trip around the landscape and cultural themes that interest you most.

Hiking around Vergeletto

The SAC hiking route from Vergeletto leads via Camana and Fümegn to Bocchetta di Doia, then descends to Lago d'Alzasca. The lake lies on this access route and is described as a beautiful, ideal place for swimming. Conditions on the route can vary depending on the season; there may still be snow in early summer. Before visiting, also check seasonal conditions and the situation at the water.

Another circular route leads from Vergeletto to Capanna Ribia and back. It passes through beech and birch forests and, from Alp del Pianaccio onward, through larch forest. On the descent, the trail follows the river through the valleys of Fùmegn and Camana. This route therefore offers a different landscape from the trail to Lago d'Alzasca: here, forest sections and the descent along the river shape the described circuit.

Alpe Salei and other hiking destinations

Alpe Salei lies at an altitude of about 1,800 metres on the ridge between the Valle Onsernone and the Valle di Vergeletto. The Funivia Zott takes seven minutes to travel from Vergeletto to Alpe Salei; it operates seasonally. Check the timetable before setting out. Vergeletto is also accessible by car or by bus towards Spruga; the bus journey includes a change in Russo. Check the current connections and transfer times in the timetable.

The “Nelle valli ticinesi” route starts at Alpe Salei. It offers detours to Lago di Salei and Passo del Bùsan. A clear alpine lake can also be reached in about a 20-minute walk from the upper cable-car station at Alpe Salei. The Sentiero degli alpeggi leads from Alpe Salei via Alpe Arena to Alpe Porcareccio. These details help distinguish between different hiking destinations: a route with detours, a lake about a 20-minute walk away, and a trail passing several alpine pastures.

Mills and Farina Bóna

The mills of Vergeletto give the town’s history a distinctive focus. A guided tour introduces and explains the old watermills and their stone millstones. Tours are offered while the mill is open, as well as outside opening hours. They include a tasting and a free packet of Farina Bóna; the specific offerings may depend on the local organisation.

Farina Bóna is still made at the mills of Vergeletto today. It is available directly at the mills; check availability before travelling. In one traditional method of preparation, corn was roasted until about one-third of the kernels had popped, and then ground. The phrase “about one-third” refers to the proportion of kernels that popped, not an exact quantity.

Village history and culture

Until the 19th century, five mills were in operation in Vergeletto; one was restored in the early 21st century. The parish church of Beata Vergine Annunciata was built in 1658 and extended in 1672. If you would like to learn about the village’s development as well as go hiking, you can include the “Vergeletto ieri e oggi” walk. It covers settlement features, history and food, as well as the village’s agricultural and tourism development from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day.
