Accommodation in Verscio
Verscio is in the Canton of Ticino and the Locarno District, and belongs to the municipality of Terre di Pedemonte. Until April 13, 2013, Verscio was an independent political municipality; on April 14, it merged with Tegna and Cavigliano to form the new municipality. When placing place names in travel information in context, this distinction is helpful: Verscio is the specific place, while Terre di Pedemonte is the municipality. Here you’ll find both architectural and cultural history and a range of routes to explore on foot and by bicycle.
Culture and townscape
The parish church of San Fedele is in Verscio and features Romanesque and late Baroque architectural elements; its consecration is recorded as having taken place in 1214. The Palazzo Cavalli is a three-story building dating from around the 18th century. It features picturesque portal decorations, a courtyard with a loggia, and a portico. The ISOS inventory records a restoration of the palazzo in 2005.
The exhibits at the Museo Comico range from posters, photographs, and musical instruments to masks, clown and elephant figures, sculptures, and toys. It also features objects and films by prominent comedians; films by Grock, the “King of Clowns,” are shown in particular. The museum opened in August 2000. Multilingual guided tours last one hour and are designed for groups of no more than 20 people.
Hikes and other routes
The Verscio–Oratorio Sant'Anna–Castelliere di Tegna–Tegna hike passes through woodland with chestnut, birch, and beech trees. At the prehistoric Castelliere di Tegna, trails introduce visitors to the site through the themes of archaeology, geomorphology, and history. This thematic approach adds a historical and landscape perspective to the walk through the woods.
At the Castelliere, there are practical and fun activities for children aged six and over when accompanied by their parents. A permanent orienteering course covers Tegna, Verscio, and Cavigliano and includes 44 checkpoints. It is designed to be available year-round; the routes are suitable for walks, runs, and bike rides. The different descriptions help when comparing the options: the orienteering course is defined by its checkpoints and three locations, while the hike lists a specific sequence of stops leading to Tegna.
Another option is the Valle Onsernone e-bike tour: Verscio–Vergeletto–Verscio. It starts and ends in Verscio, passes through the Valle Onsernone and Valle di Vergeletto, and is around 50 kilometers long. When comparing activities, the orienteering course is described by the number of checkpoints, whereas the e-bike tour is described by its approximate total distance and the valleys it passes through.
Getting there and finding your way around
To reach the hike, take the Centovallina from Locarno to Verscio; check the timetable before you travel. Verscio’s railway station and the tracks of the Centovalli Railway date from around 1920. The main route through the village is paved and includes an incline. Both the area’s historic railway connection and specific features of its townscape can help you find your way around Verscio.
