Aranno lies on a terrace on the left slope of the Valle della Magliasina. From some spots in the village, the view extends to Lake Maggiore and Monte Rosa. The medieval village layout, with its arcades and lanes, defines the place. The village is also home to examples of sacred art and traditional crafts, as well as a marked circular hiking trail through the valley.

Village Layout and Cultural Heritage

The lanes and arcades convey the village’s medieval character. The historic centre’s recognition also has a specific history: in 1997, Aranno received the Premio Aspan for its detailed plan to protect the historic centre. The Vezio–Aranno floodplain of the Magliasina has been designated an area of national importance since 2003. In the surrounding area, forests and alpine pastures shape the mountainous landscape, offering panoramic views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding peaks. This distinguishes the viewpoints in the village from views of the lake and peaks in the surrounding area.

The Maglio del Malcantone tells a notable chapter in the area’s craft history. The Righetti family of Aranno, led by Giuseppe Righetti, built the bar hammer mill in 1860. The forge produced everyday iron tools, including scythes, shovels and hoes. The Maglio del Malcantone is the only bar hammer mill currently in existence in Switzerland. Founded in 1979, the Fondazione Maglio del Malcantone restored both the workshop and the building in 1992.

The Chiesa di San Vittore also brings together several building phases: the parish church dates from the 14th century, was extended at the beginning of the 17th century, and was lengthened again in later centuries. Its chancel vault is decorated with illusionistic frescoes by Cipriano Pelli of Aranno, dating from 1777.

The Cappella della Vergine di Caravaggio stands at the Aranno–Breno road junction. The Pelli family founded it in 1745; the chapel preserves 18th-century frescoes depicting scenes of the apparition of the Madonna di Caravaggio from Bergamo. Ancient funerary stelae from Aranno provide another trace of history: some bear inscriptions in a North Etruscan alphabet that was later adopted by the Celts.

Every summer, OML holds its long-running “concerts for audience and orchestra” series in Aranno. Dates and programme vary; if a concert is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.

Hiking in the Magliasina Valley

The Sentiero delle meraviglie is a marked circular trail through the Magliasina Valley. It runs between Novaggio, Ponte di Vello and Aranno and is considered particularly suitable for families. The trail includes traces of an ancient castle and mines where people once searched for gold. The circular route therefore combines a specific insight into the valley’s history with a hike through the places mentioned.

The Sentiero delle meraviglie can be reached by PostBus. Check the timetable before setting out; seasonal conditions may affect access. Six mountain hikes are also listed in the area around Aranno.

If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Aranno, you can choose what to focus on: the village layout, churches and Maglio offer a glimpse into cultural history, while the Sentiero delle meraviglie adds a marked circular route through the valley.
