Bogno is a district of the City of Lugano in the canton of Ticino and belongs to the Val Colla district. The village combines mountain scenery and a traditional settlement layout with historic churches, hiking trails and a mountain biking circuit. This means that both culture and outdoor activities can take centre stage on your trip; you can decide which appeals to you more by considering the specific routes and buildings.

Mountain Scenery and Village Character

Bogno lies in the eastern Val Colla at an elevation of about 973 metres, on the upper reaches of the Cassarate River. One of the Cassarate’s main sources is in the village area. The mountainous valley is bordered to the east by Monte Bar, at 1,816 metres, and to the west by Monte Caval Drossa, at 1,637 metres. Both mountains mark the natural boundary with Val Capriasca. The river, elevation and two mountains provide clear points of reference in the landscape around Bogno.

The village’s layout also shapes its character: closely spaced stone houses and cobbled lanes reflect the traditional architecture of the mountainous Ticino region. Its compact structure contrasts clearly with the expansive mountain scenery. Bogno thus combines a cohesive village centre with a landscape shaped by its valley, river and peaks.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

Bogno is considered a starting point for several hiking trails that connect Val Colla with Capriasca and with passes leading towards Italy. These include Passo di San Lucio. The Towards Monte Bar hiking route starts in the village of Bogno and finishes with the descent via Alpe Musgatina towards the village of Corticiasca. Its starting point and the described final section give you a clear idea of how the route is laid out.

The Val Colla Bike offers a different kind of route: it is a scenic mountain biking circuit that starts and finishes in Bogno. By comparison, Towards Monte Bar is described in terms of its starting point in the village and descent towards Corticiasca.

Capanna San Lucio and Accommodation

Capanna San Lucio is situated on the slopes of Gazzirola at Passo del San Lucio. From there, you can enjoy views across Val Colla and towards the nearby Italian Val Cavargna. The refuge can be reached from Bogno-Certara in about 1 hour and 30 minutes; the duration may vary depending on conditions.

Capanna San Lucio has 22 beds and showers with hot water. A publicly accessible agriturismo has a dairy with a cheese cellar and 25 beds. These two accommodation options offer different features: the Capanna is noted for its mountain-pass location, views and showers, while the agriturismo is noted for its dairy and cheese cellar. As facilities can change, check the latest information and bed availability before planning your trip.

Historic Churches

The Chiesa di S. Rocco is a late-medieval building that was extended in 1780. Its bell tower has a Baroque upper storey and is topped by an octagonal dome.

The Chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo stands in a scenic location above the village. It was extended and remodelled in 1662. Inside is a remarkable stucco altar with a wooden ciborium dating from the 17th century. The dates help distinguish the churches’ histories: 1662 refers to the extension and remodelling of this church, while 1780 refers to the extension of S. Rocco. Together with the church’s location above the village and their different decorative features, this makes for another cultural highlight in Bogno.
