Cademario offers several themes to explore during a stay: hikes with views of the lake and Alps, historic churches and the DOT SPA at the Kurhaus. The trails vary in landscape and destination; the cultural sites focus on architectural history, frescoes and a monastery chapel open to visitors during the day.

Hiking trails and different destinations

The Cademario–Magliaso hike is a scenic route between hills and lake, with views of the Alps. To get there, take the train to Lugano and then PostBus 422 to Cademario. Parking for the hike is available at Kurhaus Cademario. Check the timetable before setting off if you are travelling by public transport.

The Sentiero dei filosofi begins near the “Cademario, Lisone” stop. The trail is considered easy to walk and well signposted, and passes through the natural amphitheatre formed by Monte Gradiccioli. Along the way, it passes through Piano del Caroggio, a small clearing in the Magliasina Valley with chestnut forests. Check public transport connections in advance if you plan to use the stop to get there.

An official hiking brochure from 2014 describes the Cademario–Agra–Cademario route: it follows an official trail north around Monte Cervello to Laghetto di Agra; the return follows an old downhill path to the starting point. The Cademario–Aranno route, also described there, leads over Montaccio to Aranno along a forest track. It is possible to return towards Cademario via the route through Forcora. Check trail conditions locally. On the route to Aranno, you can take a detour to Chiesetta di San Bernardo. From there, views extend across much of Medio Malcantone and into the Vedeggio Valley; check local access conditions before visiting.

A gravel-bike tour also leads to Cademario: the “Malcantone hills gravel bike tour – Short” route climbs from Bioggio through the vineyards of Ronchi. In Cademario, an information board along the route provides historical, cultural and nature-related information about the places it passes through.

Churches, frescoes and local history

The old Romanesque church of Sant'Ambrogio was originally the parish church of Cademario and was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. It is considered one of the oldest churches in the Canton of Ticino and is already mentioned in a will from 1387. Located on a rise below Cademario, it offers views over the Gulfs of Lugano and Agno. As of 1 January 2026, the Chiesa parrocchiale di Sant'Ambrogio con tesoro is listed in category A of the cantonal inventory of cultural property.

The restored old church preserves Romanesque and late Gothic frescoes depicting the Revelation of the Word, Hell and the Last Judgement. The Romanesque apse also has traces of decorative ornamentation. Archaeological investigations confirmed the church’s uniform Romanesque character.

Cademario’s present-day parish church was originally dedicated to Santa Maria del Popolo; since 1833, it has been dedicated to Saint Ambrose. Its façade features an 18th-century fresco depicting the Assumption of Mary. The S.S. Francesco e Chiara monastery was founded in 1992 by the S. Maria di Monteluce monastery in S. Erminio near Perugia. Its chapel can be visited at any time during the day.
