If you choose Carona as your destination, its trails, landscape and architectural history can appeal to a range of interests. The village lies on the southern slope of the Monte San Salvatore massif, on a morphological terrace between 580 and 750 metres. From Carona, the view extends across the Gulf of Morcote and the Melide saddle.

Hillside setting and village character

The historic centre is compact. Terraced streets and courtyards follow the slopes of the Arbostora Peninsula. Carona’s territory includes extensive areas of deciduous and coniferous forest, historic agricultural terraces and meadows. The built-up historic core and the surrounding landscape features thus stand side by side as distinct aspects of the village.

Alpe Vicania is also located in a nature and landscape conservation area recognised at both municipal and cantonal level. Parco San Grato lies southeast of Carona. The high-altitude botanical garden features collections of rhododendrons, azaleas and conifers; its elevation is given as approximately 690 to 750 metres.

Trails and nature experiences

Parco San Grato has more than 5.5 kilometres of trails, divided into botanical, relaxation, panoramic, artistic and fairy-tale themes. This layout offers different thematic ways to explore the park. It also includes a play area for children of all ages, with swings, seesaws and slides, as well as a large multi-purpose castle, skill games, rope climbing nets and a zip line.

The historic Melide–Carona trail is also known as the Sentiero dei morti. Its name refers to the former practice of Melide residents carrying their deceased in procession to Carona. From Torello, an uphill unpaved path passes the Madonna d’Ongero sanctuary on its way to Carona. The route runs below villages, churches, sanctuaries and forests. The Sentiero delle 6 chiese begins at the parish church of San Salvatore and ends at the Santa Maria di Torello monastery.

Along the Melide–Carona trail, in the municipality of Carona, there is a glacial erratic engraved with markings: 50 cup marks, a cross and two grooves. Those interested in such details along the way will find a tangible link between the hiking route and local history here, without needing to assume any interpretation of the engravings.

Churches and architectural history

The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta di Torello is a Romanesque building with a red porphyry stone façade. It originally belonged to an Augustinian monastery, which was abandoned in 1389. The parish church of San Giorgio in Carona dates from the 15th century; its choir fresco depicting the Last Judgment is the work of Domenico Pezzi. The Madonna d’Ongero sanctuary was built between 1624 and 1640 on the site of a small chapel dating from 1515.

Santa Marta also offers several points of historical interest: the church of the brotherhood contains frescoes dating from 1486. It was completely rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, with the new building completed in 1709. These different dates trace the church’s history from its older frescoes to its later construction.

Check visiting conditions

The Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta di Torello has a special access restriction: it is permanently closed because it is located in a private home. A visit is possible only by appointment or invitation. Check this possibility before travelling.

Piscina di Carona has a 50 × 25-metre Olympic-sized pool and a 10-metre diving platform. During the 2026 swimming season, it is not open to the public. If you plan to visit in a later season, check access and facility information in advance.
