Fornasette offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the Dogana Sud – Fornasette border crossing, the Le Fornaci sports field and historical points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, it helps to plan your trip around your interests. Practical travel arrangements, football and local history can play different roles; there is also a cross-border cycling project that should be understood as a planned initiative.

Border crossing and travel arrangements

The Dogana Sud – Fornasette border crossing is unstaffed. Individual tourist traffic is permitted there 24 hours a day, Monday to Sunday; however, operating conditions may change. If your trip involves crossing the border, check the current conditions before setting off. The crossing is located at Piazza Dogana 2, 6988 Ponte Tresa. Check this location information before travelling as well.

If your journey includes PostAuto route 429, bicycles may be carried, but space is limited. The timetable is valid from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026. Confirm bicycle spaces in advance if you plan to use the route for your trip. This lets you incorporate this specific rule into your travel arrangements without confusing it with the border crossing.

A sporting point of interest

The Le Fornaci sports field in Fornasette is a floodlit natural-grass pitch with minimum dimensions of 57.6 Ă— 90 metres. It is intended for football and small-sided football. The combination of surface, lighting, size and the two football formats makes this a clearly defined sporting point of interest. If football is one of your travel interests, you can take this into account when considering the area; it is clearly distinct from its cultural and historical points of interest.

Local history and patronal feast

Local history also offers points of interest from different periods. Around 1920 to 1930, there was a restaurant and a grocery shop in Monteggio (Fornasette). This period places both within everyday life at the time. A chapel still stands on Via Mairocoli. The chapel and the former businesses thus represent different aspects of local history: a surviving building and a historical snapshot of everyday local life.

At the San Francesco alle Fornasette patronal feast in 2018, there was a mass, an “incanto” and a lunch under pavilions in the church forecourt. Pets were also blessed at the celebration. These programme items refer to this festival in 2018. If you would like to plan your trip around such a celebration, check the current dates and programme locally.

A planned mobility project

Blu Tresa is planned as a cross-border project. It is intended to enable visitors to travel sustainably to cultural and tourist destinations along the corridor. The plan is to connect Luino in Italy with the Fornasette border crossing and then with the cycling network of the Canton of Ticino. The initiative is part of the Interreg Italy–Switzerland 2021–2027 programme. Blu Tresa therefore describes a planned connection, not a cycling route that is already available for use. This distinguishes the corridor project from the specific option of carrying bicycles on PostAuto route 429, for which a limited-period timetable applies.
