Gentilino combines a strong cultural focus with sacred art, historic façades and links to literary history. This offers a clear guide when choosing where to stay: you can focus on the cemetery and the Hermann Hesse educational and commemorative trail, or explore façade paintings, architectural styles and ecclesiastical art. The following themes vary in scale—from a single trompe-l’œil façade detail to a church complex set among meadows and vineyards.

The Cemetery and Hermann Hesse Trail

The Cimitero di Sant’Abbondio is considered one of the most important monumental cemeteries in Ticino. The Hermann Hesse educational and commemorative trail begins in Montagnola and leads to the cemetery in Gentilino, where the artist has rested since 1962. Here, a place of remembrance meets a biographical connection to Hesse. If you would like to find out in advance about the people buried there, you can consult a map referenced in the cemetery’s visitor information. If you plan to follow the trail, check its current accessibility before your trip.

Historic Houses and Façade Details

The Antica Casa Gamboni on Via Cà di Sotto is one of the oldest and most valuable residential buildings in the municipality. Its decorated façade is in the late Renaissance style. The date 1610 on the façade refers to a rebuilding or renovation by the Gamboni family; both interpretations remain possible. At Casa Casellini on Piazzetta al Portico, by contrast, the focus is on illusionistic architectural decoration. Parts of its façade feature such painted design elements. There is also a fresco imitating a marble relief and a depiction of the Judgment of Solomon. The date 1498 has been repainted at the top of the dormer window. The houses therefore offer different points of interest: Casa Gamboni invites an open interpretation of a date, while Casa Casellini features painted architecture and specific pictorial subjects.

Casa Sant’Abbondio and Casa Somazzi

Casa Sant’Abbondio also brings together architectural and art history. Its façades feature illusionistic architectural details. The house was built toward the end of the 17th century at the behest of two clerics from the Bottani family. In 1843, the family had a chapel dedicated to Saint Clare built and commissioned Bartolomeo Antonio Solari to paint frescoes in several rooms of Casa Sant’Abbondio. Hugo Ball, Emmy Ball-Hennings and Hans Arp also lived there for a time. The three artists were among the co-founders of the Dada movement in Zurich. This house thus brings together a sacred foundation, a fresco commission and a connection to Dada history.

Casa Somazzi offers a different work by Solari: the painter from Figino decorated ceilings there with frescoes depicting animals, still lifes and plant motifs. The late neoclassical building has had its present appearance since 1860. By comparison, the building history of Casa Sant’Abbondio dates back to the end of the 17th century. The two houses offer a chance to consider different architectural periods and forms of painting side by side.

Sacred Art and Surroundings

The Oratorio della Presentazione di Gesù al tempio in Gentilino dates from 1670 and has a concave façade in the Barocchetto style. Inside is a marble altar with an oval copy of the 18th-century painting “Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.” The curved façade and the work on the altar make different impressions: one through its architectural form, the other through its furnishings. The Sant’Abbondio church complex in Gentilino offers another way to explore sacred art. It has 14 Stations of the Cross from the 17th century, painted in oil on copper panels.

The church complex lies among meadows and vineyards. This setting provides a point of interest in its own right, alongside the architectural and artistic details of the complex. The public transport stop “Gentilino, S. Abbondio” serves the complex. If you plan to travel by public transport, check the current timetable in advance.
