Mezzovico brings together themed routes and hikes, church art and archaeological traces. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on different aspects: a route through the region, historic buildings or local cultural monuments. The Strada Regina passes through Mezzovico-Vira; the municipality is one of the eleven municipalities along this themed route.

Strada Regina and Hiking

The Strada Regina is over 30 kilometres long and now follows official routes in the cantonal hiking trail network. Another hike, “A spasso per i boschi”, connects Mezzovico and Sigirino. It is listed as 15.8 kilometres long, with a walking time of 6 hours and 30 minutes and an elevation gain of 1,369 metres. Walking times may vary depending on conditions; check the route details against current information before setting out.

A route by the Lugano Region through the Monti di Mezzovico passes through the Valle Cusello, follows a forest track and goes by typical alpine pastures.

Churches and Art in Mezzovico

Mezzovico has three churches: San Mamete, the parish church of S. Abbondio and the Oratorio di Loreto. San Mamete is architecturally and artistically significant. The church was built in several phases, from 1055 through the 15th and 16th centuries. Its nave was probably extended in Romanesque times by an addition to the south, creating a second aisle.

The choir contains a large Crucifixion fresco from 1534, which follows an iconographic type introduced by Bernardino Luini. Frescoes by the Luino school on the walls and in the choir depict the Crucifixion of Christ, the Last Judgement, the Church Fathers and the Evangelists. Smaller details are also part of the church complex: the cemetery gate bears frescoes of Saints Mamete and Anthony the Abbot, dated to 1470–1480. In the second chapel, stucco work from 1614 frames scenes from the lives of Saints Roch and Sebastian.

San Mamete is surrounded by a park of the same name and is recognised by the federal authorities as architectural heritage. The Oratorio Sant’Ambrogio al Castello stands on a wooded rocky outcrop in the Mezzovico-Vira area. Built between the 9th and 10th centuries, the building is a national historic monument and features Late Romanesque wall paintings depicting a Majestas Domini.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

At S. Abbondio, cremation burials with characteristic Roman-era remains are among the archaeological findings. They also point to an early stone church dating from the 7th century; the complex as it exists today was built in the mid-15th century. The parish church of S. Abbondio is classified as a monument of local-regional significance.

The Mezzovico-Vira stele also offers a glimpse into the area’s early history. It is attributed to Golasecca culture III A and dated to the 5th to early 4th century BC. It is also considered the northernmost inscribed stone document of the Sottoceneri and the only one from the Valle del Vedeggio. Numerous votive chapels in the municipality are regarded as historical testimonies to local religious devotion. Some fountains are linked to Ticino’s agricultural history.

Squares, Landscape and Local Produce

Piaza du Buteghin is one of the municipality’s public squares; many social and leisure activities take place there throughout the year. The restored chestnut woodlands were once essential to providing for the local population. This local history adds another perspective on life in Mezzovico to the picture offered by its churches and archaeological finds.
