Discover Neggio: wildlife, nature trail and village history
Accommodation in Neggio
Neggio sits on a sunny hillside, combining views across the lake with green landscapes, nature experiences and historic landmarks. When choosing a destination, you can focus on different highlights: the Sentiero didattico, Zoo Al Maglio, floral offerings or the history of the village church.
Landscape and setting of Neggio
From the hillside, the panorama extends over the gulfs of Caslano and Magliaso, as well as the Gulf of Ponte Tresa and Sassalto. The landscape includes vineyards, well-kept vegetable gardens, meadows and orchards; the settlement itself is also surrounded by greenery. The climate is very mild, partly due to the relative proximity of the lake.
The roads skirt the centre rather than reaching the heart of the settlement. Neggio can be reached via two separate roads: one climbs from Agno via Cassina d’Agno, and the other comes from Magliaso. The road into the village is one-way and ends abruptly.
The birdlife also varies with the seasons. More than 80 bird species have been recorded in the Malcantone; many of them live in the forests of Neggio. Some are resident birds, while others are migratory birds that stay there only at certain times of year. The figure refers to the Malcantone, while the forests of Neggio are described as a habitat for many of these species.
Nature trail, wildlife and flowers
The Sentiero didattico runs along a forest road and invites visitors to gain experience and answer questions that put their knowledge to the test. Activities include identifying the calls of nightingales, tits and robins. The nature trail therefore focuses both on observing nature and on active thinking.
The description of the nature trail published in 2022 presents, in the “Gusto” section, a recipe once prepared at home using wildflowers, and encourages visitors to try fried black locust flowers. This section connects a local food idea with the theme of forest flowers.
At Zoo Al Maglio, you can observe and experience at close quarters more than 300 animals from around 60 different species from all over the world. The zoo has playgrounds and picnic areas with barbecue facilities for families. The animal collection, facilities and programme may change; check which offerings are currently available before your visit.
Animal demonstrations and animal experiences are also among the possible activities at the zoo. If you would like to plan around these, it is advisable to check the current participation requirements and programme in advance.
Floricoltura Schmid – Le rose del Malcantone features roses and seasonal cut flowers among its typical products. The business offers guided tours and flower-arranging courses for children and adults, but only by reservation. If you are interested in flowers, plan your visit in advance and make a booking.
Churches and history
The Chiesa di S. Maria Annunziata was rebuilt in 1620 on the site of a 14th-century oratory. Around the middle of the 18th century, it was remodelled by extending the choir and building the side chapels and vault. The bell tower was built in 1687 and raised at a later date. The stucco decoration is by Antonio Soldati of Neggio.
Restorations carried out between 1976 and 1981 uncovered fragments of frescoes from the ancient 14th-century oratory. The building’s history therefore encompasses several phases: the earlier oratory, its reconstruction in the 17th century, later extensions and the 20th-century restoration work.
The Oratorio di San Giorgio was dedicated to Saint George, the former patron saint of the village in the Malcantone. Neggio’s historic mills also tell the story of how the water was used: it served millers and blacksmiths.
Public transport
Postbuses run to and from Cademario; there is no public transport in the evening. If you rely on public transport for your trip, check the timetable in advance and take this limitation into account when planning your evening.
