Facing south, Roveredo lies like a balcony above Lake Lugano. The area includes a significant zone of «Monti»: houses at elevations of 800 to 1,000 metres that were once used as summer residences. Animals were taken out to pasture and hay was made. Alongside the village itself, these higher elevations therefore reflect an earlier, seasonal use of the area.

Ernest Bloch and regional memory

Composer Ernest Bloch lived in Roveredo from 1930 to 1934, four years in total. He used his retreat there in particular to compose his best-known work, «Servizio sacro ebraico». These four years connect the place with a specific period in Bloch’s life and with the creation of this work.

The Archivio Audiovisivo di Capriasca e Val Colla is located in Roveredo. It collects, preserves and shares images and oral accounts that form part of the region’s memory. The municipal building in Roveredo Capriasca has an exhibition space featuring regional images and audio excerpts from recorded interviews. The complete catalogued photo archive can also be viewed at the Roveredo exhibition venue. Guided tours of the exhibition are available by appointment. As exhibition displays may change, it is best to arrange your visit in advance.

Historic traces in the village

The Oratorio di San Bernardo da Chiaravalle brings together several historical dates. The first documented visit took place on 2 September 1567. A description from the same year mentions frescoes of the Madonna, God the Father and the four Evangelists. The year 1448 is inscribed on the portal lintel; according to a report from 1719, the oratory was rebuilt. These dates refer to different stages in the building’s history and its historical record, not to a single event.

Smaller features in the village centre are also described in detail. La Fanciüra is a slab measuring 115 × 85 × 15 centimetres, with nine cup marks, two crosses and two other markings. Beside a wayside chapel is a Type B mortar stone, used as a fountain. Its basin is 35 centimetres in diameter; two depressions, a cup mark and a groove are set into its rim. Remains of the old communal aqueduct can also be seen along the village streets.

Hiking trails towards Monte Bar and the Monti

The official «Il sentiero panoramico» hike connects Corticiasca, Monte Bar and Roveredo. Monte Bar is its highest point and offers 360-degree views across the region. From there, the route descends towards the Monti di Roveredo, first across pastures and then through settlements with characteristic Rustici. A shortcut is possible via the forest road between Capanna Monte Bar and Motto della Croce. A route from Roveredo to Monte Bar leads via the Monti del maggengo and through a birch forest.

For the approach to Motto della Croce via the Monti di Roveredo, the SAC archive gives the rating «EE». This classification is a useful point of reference when choosing a hike. Another destination in the Monti is Capanna La Ginestra, in the Lusciana area. It can only be reached on foot from Roveredo, in about 45 minutes. From there, views extend to Tamaro, Gradiccioli and Lema, the Vedeggio Valley, the city of Lugano and Lake Lugano. Check the latest visitor information before setting out.

A regional food trail

The «Via dei Sapori» in Capriasca is 38.37 kilometres long and includes stops at farms, agriturismi, a dairy and a restaurant. Roveredo is its fourth stop; the walking time from Tesserete is listed as one hour. The route adds a culinary dimension to exploring the region, but is distinct from the trails to Monte Bar and the historic traces in the village.

When comparing hotels in Roveredo, planning your trip can start with deciding whether the local cultural history or hikes in the Monti will shape your stay.
