Vezia brings together a historic centre, religious buildings, garden culture and nature. If you are looking for a hotel in Vezia, these different facets can help you plan your stay: explore the history of the village, discover its gardens or get to know the landscape on a described running route.

Historic Centre, Churches and Architectural History

The houses stand close together in the historic centre, still conveying distant echoes of the village’s rural past. These include the birthplace of Padre Agostino Daldini. Mosaics by Raffaello Somazzi depicting the four Evangelists adorn its façade.

The Oratorio della Madonna delle Grazie di San Martino stands on the hill in Vezia. Its history spans a presumed Carolingian foundation, a Romanesque oratory and the present-day late Baroque building. The oratory and its associated chaplain’s house are protected cultural assets owned by the Patriziato di Vezia. A characteristic Romanesque path leads through chestnut-dotted surroundings to the oratory. The Oratorio di San Martino also contains a 16th-century image of the Madonna with Leonardesque features.

The history of the hill is also complex: traditions and archaeological finds link it to fortifications and possible medieval castle ruins. Visible traces are said to remain near the summit. This cautious interpretation is part of the story, alongside the historic buildings themselves.

Villa Negroni and Garden Spaces

Villa Negroni-Prati, formerly Villa Morosini, was built around the middle of the 18th century. Since 1989, it has been home to the Centro di Studi Bancari. The Parco di Villa Negroni offers a different focus: its formal garden is considered one of the rare formal Italian-style gardens in Ticino. Clipped boxwood hedges, a tufa grotto, fountains, statues and wrought-iron decorations define the ensemble.

The park combines an Italian-style parterre with a larger English-style area. You can compare the two styles directly as you walk around. The Parco di Villa Negroni is open year-round and free to enter. The Oasi dell’acqua also includes a fountain on Via alla Cassina, directly below historic Villa Negroni. The “Sostare per ripartire” oasis consists of a woodland and a bench, inviting visitors to rest, reflect and chat.

Bolle, Nature and Storytelling Trails

The Bolle di San Martino wetland in Vezia is of national importance and is covered by a cantonal protection plan. Its monitoring focused on water supply, water levels, local conditions and possible protective measures. Alongside the village’s buildings, the landscape offers a distinct focus on nature.

The Oasi delle fiabe connects stories with places around the municipality. Two panels with audio fairy tales are located by the primary school and at the entrance to the Bolle di San Martino. You can use a QR code to choose one or more stories. Check on site whether the signs are still there and the QR code is working.

If you are looking for a running route, the Capriasca route starts in Vezia and heads towards the Capriasca region. It runs through the woodland of Monte San Rocco and across the fields of Monda–Porza, mostly on paved roads. Routes and surfaces may change; check the current track before setting out.

Market and Local Traditions

A municipal report for 2025 mentions a weekly market on Wednesday mornings, selling products from the region. Possible locations are listed as Via San Gottardo or the portico of the Centro civico. Check the current market location before your visit. The same report says that the Fondazione OTAF sells honey, jams, eggs, and fruit and vegetable products from the region at the Masseria Gerbone. Check the current sales arrangements in advance.

A traditional nighttime torchlight procession for San Martino was established in 2022 and takes place on the Friday after St Martin’s Day. Children from the primary schools make their own lanterns. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates for your travel period.
