Coldrerio is located in southern Ticino, near the Swiss-Italian border and about four kilometres as the crow flies from Chiasso. The municipality belongs to the Canton of Ticino and the Mendrisio district and circle. Nature, sacred art and historic buildings offer different starting points for planning your trip: these include a nature park, a mill and several churches, each with its own history.

Nature and landscape

Parco del Paü is a nature park of archaeological interest in the urban area of the municipality of Coldrerio. It offers spacious areas for recreation and play. Nature features with an educational purpose are also part of the park, adding an informative dimension to the experience of nature.

A distinctive feature is the terraced amphitheatre. Its design evokes the former peat bog.

The Valle della Motta forest reserve encompasses woods, ponds, wetlands, streams, meadows and fields in the municipalities of Novazzano, Coldrerio and Mendrisio. The landscape thus extends beyond Coldrerio. Valle della Motta Park is also accessible on foot from Coldrerio, although the access route is considered less easy. If you plan to walk there from Coldrerio, check current trail conditions before your visit.

A facility in Parco della Valle della Motta can be visited by appointment through the Coldrerio municipal office. Arrange your visit in advance with the office.

Mill, art and history

Mulino del Daniello was built in 1801. A grain mill and an oil press are used for educational purposes. The construction date and use tell different aspects of this place: the former roots the mill in Coldrerio’s history, while the latter makes its mechanisms a subject for educational interpretation.

The churches, too, tell of different moments in history. Chiesa San Giorgio was consecrated on 1 June 1599 by Monsignor Filippo Archinti, Bishop of Como. Chiesa Sant’Apollonia stands on the site of a medieval church, documented as early as 1275 and dedicated to Saint George.

At Chiesa Madonna del Carmelo, the evolution of the dedication is part of the local history: a religious building was first mentioned at the site in 1578, when it was associated with Madonna del Pezoo, and only later with Madonna del Carmelo. A fresco survives from a late medieval chapel. The Chapel of the Assumption at Chiesa Madonna del Carmelo is considered Coldrerio’s most artistically significant feature and contains paintings by Pier Francesco Mola.

Further architectural history can be traced through different forms and dates. The remains of Castello di Coldrerio are incorporated into a residential building on the southeastern edge of the village; the castle was first mentioned in 1223. Palazzo Beccaria is a stately courtyard building from the 16th century. The architectural character of the Coldrerio area also includes the remains of medieval castles and notable palaces, including Palazzo Cigalini. These examples point to different architectural layers, not a single period.

At La Rotonda, an L-shaped structure made from a single wooden post recalls the idea of a pile-dwelling settlement.
