Chiasso: Cultural Sites and Routes
Accommodation in Chiasso
Chiasso lies in Ticino, right on the Italian border. Cultural sites, historic buildings and routes in the Penz showcase different facets of this destination. When choosing a hotel, you can focus on what interests you most: culture, landscapes or seasonal events.
Cultural Sites and Architectural History
The m.a.x. museo is dedicated to graphics, design, photography and contemporary visual communication. It opened on 12 November 2005 on the initiative of the Fondazione Max Huber-Kono; the building was designed by Pia Durisch and Aldo Nolli. Since 2010, the museum has been a public institution of the municipality of Chiasso and a member of ICOM. It is a ten-minute walk from Chiasso train station. Listed bus services include routes 1, 2 and 511, the cross-border SPT Como CC1 service, and PostBus routes 513, 515 and 517.
The m.a.x. museo’s changing exhibitions are arranged in cycles devoted to graphic design, art or historical graphics, and corporate graphics. Another cycle, held every two years, focuses on visual communication in photography. Nearby are the Cinema Teatro, the Spazio Officina and the Biblioteca comunale. The library is housed in an eclectic villa dating from the early 20th century, whose small tower features bifora windows. A general library with specialist collections in graphics, design and visual communication, it also preserves one of Switzerland’s most significant collections of bookplates.
The Cinema Teatro was inaugurated in 1935. Carlo Basilico designed its ceiling, entrance hall and foyer. The building was intended as a venue for film screenings and theatre and variety shows; today, the Cinema Teatro is used mainly for cultural and artistic activities such as theatre, music, dance and cinema. A cultural complex near the centre includes the theatre, the m.a.x. museo and the Spazio Officina. It hosts exhibitions, musical and theatrical performances, festivals, conferences, seminars and workshops. The Spazio Officina also serves as a laboratory for artistic expression and aesthetic education.
Routes, Landscapes and Nature in the Penz
The educational trail in the Penz is open year-round, is approximately 2.4 kilometres long and has around 150 metres of elevation gain. At a moderate pace, the walk takes about two and a half hours. The trail starts at the Penz sports complex, where there is a bus stop and large car parks. It includes a restored chestnut grove and a woodland classroom suitable for environmental education activities. Despite the dense development, the forest has significant natural value and supports numerous species in a small area.
A second route, the Sentiero delle Guardie, connects the plain of Seseglio with higher paths in Penz Park and then with the network of hiking trails in the Spina Verde di Como Regional Park. It is about 1,300 metres long, has around 90 metres of elevation gain and no challenging inclines. Compared with the educational trail in the Penz, it is shorter and has less elevation gain; an approximate walking time is also provided for the educational trail. Route information and trail alignments may change following maintenance or rerouting. Before setting out, check the latest information on the route and access.
The Itinerario dei parchi del Mendrisiotto starts near Chiasso train station and is officially signposted. Its landscape runs through lush forests and over vineyard-covered hills to panoramic viewpoints. A themed trail also crosses the vineyards in the Penz area. Merlot vines are still grown in Pedrinate, where vineyards cover the slopes of the Collina del Penz. This landscape is a distinct part of the area around Chiasso, alongside the natural value of the forest along the educational trail.
Seasonal Activities and Regional Highlights
The Stadio del ghiaccio di Chiasso has a bar and restaurant. In winter, the covered ice rink offers space for hockey and ice skating; in summer, it is open for roller skating. Events along Corso San Gottardo include the jazz festival. Nebiopoli features a large masked parade, and Festate is also among the events that attract visitors throughout the year. If you are planning your trip around an event or the seasonal use of the ice rink, check the latest dates in advance.
Chiasso is considered Switzerland’s southernmost municipality. The formerly independent village of Pedrinate has been part of Chiasso since 1976; there, boundary stone 75B marks Switzerland’s southernmost point. Close to Chiasso are the Parco delle Gole del Breggia, the Valle di Muggio and Monte Generoso. Chiasso is also considered a bridge to nearby Lombardy and a gateway to the Mendrisiotto.
The railway connection to Lugano opened in 1874; the link to Como followed two years later. The development of rail traffic laid the groundwork in 1932 for the construction of an international station in Chiasso. This history complements today’s practical travel-planning information, including the walking time from the station to the m.a.x. museo.
