Cevio brings together local history, religious art and the distinctive architecture of its grotti. The Museo di Valmaggia, historic squares and cellar complexes reveal different sides of the town: from public life and church traditions to the former storage of agricultural produce. You can get to know Cevio through its buildings and the ways its landscape has been used.

Museo di Valmaggia and the Grotti

The Museo di Valmaggia is based in Cevio and has two exhibition sites in the historic quarter of Cevio Vecchio, with its grand townhouses. The permanent exhibition explores local history and religious life, women and the life cycle, livestock farming and pastoral agriculture, as well as soapstone. These themes offer insights into different aspects of life in the region, from religious beliefs to agricultural activities.

The museum complex includes an underground cellar built beneath a boulder measuring approximately 10,000 cubic metres, as well as a grotto. Both were used to store and process dairy products, wine, potatoes and other agricultural produce. The Nucleo dei grotti di Cevio comprises 69 cellars. Their designs range from simple to ingenious, and in some cases elaborate and architecturally complex.

In the grotti, natural air currents between the boulders of the landslide area create cool, ventilated and relatively stable storage conditions. These local air currents are known as «fiadairöi». An educational trail winds through the passages, corridors and stairways of the landslide area, taking visitors through this human-shaped environment. As local trail conditions can change, it is best to check them before setting out.

The Grotto del Sole is a small building used to store produce from agriculture and livestock farming. Above the door is a fresco featuring a multicoloured floral motif; a sun motif is painted on the east gable. These details offer a closer look at the grotti through one building with its own distinctive design.

Squares and sacred architecture

Piazza di Cevio has been a centre of public life since the Middle Ages. Today, it provides a setting for concerts and theatre performances. The Pretorio, a building constructed in the mid-16th century, adds another historic landmark: its façade features 17th- and 18th-century frescoes depicting the coats of arms of the Swiss cantons and the successive families of the bailiffs.

The Chiesa della Rovana, also known as Santa Maria del Ponte, brings together architectural history and religious tradition. Built in 1651, it has been a destination for pilgrimages and religious devotion for centuries. The Baroque church is richly decorated with stucco and 17th-century frescoes, most of which are attributed to Isidoro Bianchi.

The history of the parish church of San Giovanni Battista also reaches far back, but the dates refer to different aspects: the parish of Cevio certainly existed before the 13th century, while the parish church is first mentioned indirectly in 1253. Remains of a single-nave Romanesque church with a small semicircular apse facing east were found beneath its portico. Cevio’s buildings from different eras thus stand alongside archaeological traces of earlier churches.

Trails and landscape structures

The river embankments of Cevio, built in the 19th century, are among the visible interventions in the river landscape. They extend for a total of 1,660 metres; another 600 metres consist of other river protection structures. The separate lengths make clear that these are two different types of protective structure.

For outdoor exercise, Cevio has the Percorso Vita, a 2.6-kilometre outdoor fitness trail with 15 stations that starts at the school complex. The region can also be explored from Cevio via numerous hiking trails and mountain bike routes. If you are planning a specific activity, note that these options serve different purposes: the Percorso Vita is designed as a fitness trail, while the hiking trails and mountain bike routes are for exploring the region.

Picnics with local produce

The seasonal experience «Cevio e i grotti» combines a reserved picnic featuring local produce with a walk among the ventilated cellars of Cevio Vecchio. Check before your trip whether the offer is available for your dates. The basic picnic includes two sandwiches, cheese and/or salametti, a non-alcoholic drink, a dessert and a piece of fruit. Local wine, craft beer, additional cheeses and alpine products are available on request. The experience connects the grotti with the produce whose storage and processing are part of their history.
