Mountain Scenery at Gemsstock

From Andermatt, the ride to Gemsstock climbs to almost 3,000 metres above sea level, offering a 360-degree panorama across half of Switzerland. The difference between the village’s approximate altitude and the altitude at Gemsstock gives an idea of how much elevation changes over the mountain journey described. Gemsstock offers freeriders deep powder, challenging steep slopes and descents with over 1,500 metres of vertical drop. Winter sports conditions vary depending on the season. You can also ski on the slopes around Andermatt.

Tours and Getting There

Gemsstock can be reached from Andermatt by cable car, in two sections via Gurschenalp. Trains to Andermatt run from Göschenen, Disentis and Brig. As transport connections may change seasonally, check them before your trip.

The Unteralp tour starts at Andermatt station and passes through meadows along the Unteralpreuss River and by the Gurschenbach waterfall. The Gottardo Bike Route runs from Andermatt to Biasca in Ticino, crossing the main Alpine ridge. While the river and waterfall shape the character of the Unteralp tour, the bike route crosses the main Alpine ridge on its way to its destination in Ticino. Check the Unteralp tour route description locally before setting out, and check the bike route conditions before riding.

Museum and History

The Ursern Valley Museum is housed in a patrician residence commissioned by Franz Dominik Nager in 1786. On 25 September 1799, the house served as the headquarters of Russian Field Marshal Suvorov. The permanent exhibition explores the history and culture of the valley, as well as tourism, the military, alpine economy, pack-animal transport and natural history. Pack-animal transport refers to the movement of goods using pack animals, adding a distinct perspective on the alpine economy to the other themes. The building’s construction date and historical use come together in one place.

The Suvorov Monument was erected in 1898 to commemorate Suvorov’s Alpine campaign in September 1799 and remember those who fell. The dates distinguish the event from its later memorial. Andermatt Concert Hall is considered the highest concert hall in Switzerland and the first purpose-built venue for artistic events in an Alpine village.
