Sarreyer is a locality in the political municipality of Val de Bagnes in the Swiss canton of Valais. The village lies on a sunny plateau on the right-hand side of the Val de Bagnes valley, at around 1,200 metres above sea level. Its sun-weathered mazots shape the village’s appearance; Sarreyer is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. Alongside its location, this gives the village a clearly defined architectural identity.

Scie et Moulins: Historic Craftsmanship

The Scie et Moulins de Sarreyer dates back to a traditional sawmill built in 1837; two grain mills and an apple mill were added later. Since 1987, the complex has been classified as a historic monument and is unique in Valais. A single vertical wheel powers both a saw and a mill. On a guided tour, you can see the mechanism in action as it saws long logs, grinds grain and crushes apples.

The seasonal Train des Combins programme also includes a visit to the village of Sarreyer as part of the “Nécessairement beau...” tour. Check the programme dates before your trip. Group visits to the Scie et Moulins can be arranged on request outside regular opening hours; please make arrangements for such a visit in advance.

Routes in and around Sarreyer

Sarreyer–Les Creux is a signposted snowshoe route: the 3.7-kilometre circular route has 265 metres of ascent. It starts in the upper part of the village, follows the path towards Agiettes to the hamlet of Les Creux at 1,509 metres, and then returns to Sarreyer.

A second, different route is the Enduro 05 (advanced) La Chaux–Shlérondes–Le Châble. It is designated as an enduro route, is 10.6 kilometres long, and has 55 metres of ascent and 1,432 metres of descent. The route passes through authentic hamlets and continues from Les Shlérondes to Sarreyer. In terms of elevation profile, the 265 metres of ascent on the circular route compare with the 1,432 metres of descent on Enduro 05.
