Lax between sledging runs, irrigation channels and village culture
Accommodation in Lax
Lax connects the Aletsch region with the high valley of Goms. When looking for a hotel in Lax, it is worth considering your travel dates and what you want to focus on: the sledging run winds through snow-covered forests, Rällen takes place during Holy Week, and the reLAX circular trail brings art and landscape together. You can plan your stay around whether winter activities, local customs, or trails and architecture are your priority.
Art and architecture in Lax
Artworks by artists based in Lax can be seen along the reLAX circular trail. Its centrepiece is a spectacular staircase that winds around a rock. The trail also offers lovely views and the soothing sound of the Rhône. Art, a striking structure and the landscape give the circular trail its varied character.
The Zillwald settlement offers a distinct architectural touch, too. It is considered an example of modern architecture, balancing the topography with local architectural traditions. Alongside the art on the trail, the relationship between the terrain and built form is another reason to explore Lax.
Sledging run and hiking routes
The Fiescheralp–Lax sledging run is 11 kilometres long and leads through snow-covered forests. From Lax, the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway takes sledgers back to Fiesch. The run’s length and the train connection are useful details for planning a winter trip; check the current timetable in advance.
The Stoneman Glaciara Hike covers a different scale: the route runs for 65 kilometres with 3,300 metres of ascent through Goms, the Aletsch Arena and the Binntal. You can complete it as a trail run or hike over one, two or three daily stages. One section runs between Fiesch and Lax. The total distance and elevation gain give an idea of the tour’s scope, while the stage options provide a framework for planning how long it will take. Check route conditions before setting out.
The Laggera high-level trail runs above Lax, Fiesch and Fieschertal, following the old Laggerawyssa and Fiescherwyssa irrigation channels for much of its length. Both channels were built in the 14th century. Once you reach the Altbach, the elevation remains practically constant as the trail continues above the valley towards Fieschertal. The routes therefore differ in their main features: the Laggera is defined by its old irrigation channels and high-level course, while the Stoneman is characterised by its total distance, elevation gain and choice of stages.
Local customs and landscape
Rällen is an old Lax tradition that is still practised during Holy Week. Instead of ringing bells, children and young people make wooden ratchets sound, gather in front of the church and walk through the village in single file. The tradition returns every year during Holy Week, but exact times and routes may vary locally. If you are travelling specifically to see it, check the dates and schedule before your visit.
Despite its high altitude, Lax has a mild climate and is considered a climatic health resort. Lax is also said to be the only place in the region where the frost-sensitive walnut tree still grows quite well.
The Lax barbecue site is on a meadow just above the village. It can be reached on foot or by vehicle and offers views of the mountains and valley. Check access information before your visit; visibility and vegetation can affect the view.
Getting here and finding your way around
The reLAX circular trail starts at Lax railway station, which is reachable by train from Brig or Oberwald. From Lax, trains run every half hour towards Goms and towards Brig and Visp; check the current timetable before travelling. By car, follow cantonal road 19 to the circular trail, then take Furkastrasse to the car park.
Lax can be reached from the west via Brig. In summer, the approach from the east is via the Grimsel, Furka or Nufenen passes; in winter, take your car on the shuttle train through the Furka Tunnel. Brig is 15 kilometres away; the car shuttle through the Furka Tunnel covers 27 kilometres. Check seasonal pass and car-shuttle conditions before setting off.
