Vétroz Among Vineyards and Culture
Accommodation in Vétroz
Vétroz is in the Conthey district, in the French-speaking part of the canton of Valais, Switzerland. The municipality comprises the villages of Vétroz and Magnot. Vineyards on the sunny slopes of the Rhône Valley define the area. This brings together winegrowing, routes through the vineyards and local culture as a distinctive mix for a stay.
Amigne and the Wine Landscape
Amigne is a rare grape variety: there are 38 hectares in total worldwide, all of them planted in Valais. Of these, 30 hectares are in Vétroz. These figures firmly establish the grape variety in the municipality and give winegrowing here a special connection to the place.
The ground beneath the vines is also part of the wine landscape. The soils in Vétroz’s vineyards consist of black schist, formed from marine sediments deposited 160 to 170 million years ago. The landscape can thus be considered both in terms of the distribution of Amigne and its geological makeup.
Wine Routes and Route Details
The 11.2-kilometre wine route passes through the vineyards of Vétroz and Conthey. It follows a hilly road and trail and is accessible year-round. When planning, take the 11.2 kilometres and hilly terrain into account; check local conditions before setting out.
The “Balade au coeur des Coteaux du Soleil” wine route runs from Ardon to Conthey. It passes through 716 hectares of terraced vineyards and the Amigne vineyards on the upper slopes of Vétroz. Murals and Cultural Traditions
Jasm One’s mural “Aquamarelle” is located at Les Plantys primary school in Vétroz. It explores water as a source of life and dreams. “Phoenix” by Spanish artist Sabek is on the façade of the fire station and symbolises rebirth and resilience. The two works connect specific locations with different themes.
The free “Art Valais” mobile app offers geolocation, information about the artists and a micro-documentary video about the creation of the work, helping visitors discover “Aquamarelle”. As availability and features may change, check the app’s current availability and the features it offers in advance.
The annual Fête interculturelle, held as part of the Fête de la Madeleine, is also part of the area’s cultural identity. It showcases the traditions, flavours and craftsmanship of numerous communities. Alongside individual murals, the shared traditions that form part of Vétroz’s cultural life are also in focus.
