Ovronnaz: Bisse Trail, Mountain Activities and Thermal Baths
Accommodation in Ovronnaz
Ovronnaz offers different options depending on when you visit: a short Bisse loop, botanical nature trails, winter routes, experiences on the alpine pastures and a thermal bath. When planning your hotel stay, it’s best to first decide which activities are important for your trip. Some activities are explicitly seasonal, dependent on snow or subject to suitable weather conditions.
Hiking, Bisses and cultural heritage
The Petit Tour du Bisse starts and ends at the Ovronnaz Tourist Office. The route leads to the Salentse and follows a 300-metre section of the Bisse there. It is 1.8 kilometres long in total, classified as an easy T1 route and listed as taking 30 minutes to walk. Actual walking time may vary depending on conditions; access to water and trail conditions are also seasonal.
The Mille Fleurs de la Seya botanical nature trail is located in the heights above Ovronnaz. This educational trail combines a quiz at 20 stations with information panels and a flower guide. The educational installations may be maintained seasonally. The Sentier des Légendes focuses not on plants but on cultural heritage: six panels along the trail provide information about regional legends and myths.
Winter routes and activities in the snow
The Ovronnaz ski area lies between 1,400 and 2,500 metres above sea level and is accessible by chairlifts or ski lifts. Several cross-country ski trails can be accessed from the Tourbillon Nordic Centre. They wind through the surrounding forest and have varying levels of difficulty; trail availability depends on snow conditions.
The Jorasse snowshoe route offers a different perspective, linking Ovronnaz and Jorasse through forest and alpine pastures. Along the way, there are views of the village and the surrounding mountains. The Swiss Snow Kids Village has small beginner slopes at the upper edge of the village. Its snow garden is accessible on foot or by road using a free shuttle bus, without having to enter the main ski area. The shuttle bus may operate seasonally.
Alpine pastures, cheese and seasonal experiences
Cheese is made and sold directly at the Alp d’Odonne in summer, including Sérac d’Odonne. There is also a cheese dairy and a Buvette there, which operates seasonally. The annual Inalpe and Désalpe celebrations in Ovronnaz include cow fights and musical performances at the Alp d’Odonne in June and September.
The Buvette de Loutze is located above Ovronnaz. In summer, it can be reached by car on a paved road or on foot via a hiking trail. In winter, the ascent is made on foot, on snowshoes or on touring skis; opening is seasonal. Regional specialities include fondue, a Valais platter and Brisolée. Game dishes are served in autumn. Check which seasonal offerings are currently available before visiting.
There are also several different options for active days. The Le Tour des trois Alpages mountain bike loop starts and ends at the Ovronnaz Tourist Office and passes through Tourbillon, the Buvette de Loutze, the Alpage d’Odonne and Jorasse. The Ardève climbing sector is located at an altitude of 1,474 metres and offers routes graded 6a to 7c. A sporty scooter descent crosses alpine pastures and forest and covers a vertical drop of 500 metres; it is seasonal and weather-dependent.
Thermal baths and when to visit
The Bains d’Ovronnaz offer thermal water with views of the Valais Alps. The facilities listed include a sauna, whirlpools, a hammam and massage treatments; the water is considered soothing and relaxing. As the facilities may change, check which offerings are currently available before your visit.
The seasons shape the choice of experiences: cheese-making at the Alp d’Odonne is a summer activity, while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing depend on the winter conditions at the time. The celebrations at the Alp d’Odonne are held in June and September. The Tourist Office also organises weekly activity programmes for summer, autumn and winter, at various locations and for both children and adults. As the programmes are updated seasonally, it’s worth checking the latest information when choosing when to travel and planning your hotel stay.
