Explore Salvan through a range of interests: the village centre tells the story of Marconi’s telecommunications history, the Tour des hameaux follows the hamlets’ architectural heritage, and other trails lead through gorges and alpine landscapes. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing between village walks, multi-day tours and seasonal offerings.

Marconi’s history in the village centre

Salvan’s village church is dedicated to Saint Maurice. Guglielmo Marconi’s early wireless transmissions in 1895 are also associated with the area. The Fondation Marconi and the Radio Museum in the centre present his telecommunications experiments. The Fondation offers four formats for guided museum visits. They are available year-round, subject to availability; booking arrangements may change.

The Sentier Marconi is a circular trail that starts in the centre of Salvan and features ten information panels. Pierre Bergère is a special site connected with this theme: the erratic boulder is considered a key location in the history of telecommunications. The museum and trail offer different ways to explore the subject: the experiments in the exhibition space and interpretation along the route.

Hamlet trails and architectural history

Salvan lies on a small plateau lined with chalets and stone former hotels dating from the pre-war era of tourism. The Tour des hameaux is an accessible walking trail focused on the architectural heritage of the hamlets in the municipality of Salvan. Along the route are traditional buildings such as barns, granaries, bakehouses, mills and houses. There are also several places to stop for refreshments or have a picnic along the way.

The hamlet of Les Granges also has its own distinctive landscape: it lies on an elevated plateau and offers expansive views over the steep descent to the RhĂ´ne plain. La Creusaz, meanwhile, can be reached by cable car. From there, the panorama extends to Mont Blanc; the area is also the starting point for numerous excursions to higher elevations.

Mountain trails and Lac de Salanfe

The Tour de la Vallée du Trient is usually completed over five days and is generally accessible from early July to mid-October. One stage leads from Salvan via the Vallon de Van to Lac de Salanfe. As mountain conditions can change, check the current trail conditions before planning your trip.

Lac de Salanfe lies at 1,925 metres in a glacial basin surrounded by the Dents-du-Midi, the Tour Salière and the Luisin. A family-friendly walking trail loops around the lake in less than two hours. An educational trail introduces visitors to alpine fauna and flora as well as the lake’s distinctive geology. Salanfe can be reached on foot in about an hour and a half from the Vallon de Van above Salvan-Les Marécottes. The circular walk around the lake and the walk to reach it refer to different sections of the journey and have different time estimates.

Gorges, nature trails and wildlife

The trail through the Gorges du Dailley connects Les Granges with Van d’en Bas and offers views of the Salanfe and the Alps. Footbridges and stairs are part of the route. The Gorges du Triège can be explored on a circular trail about one kilometre long, with several footbridges and three bridges. Near La Creusaz, interactive trails add to the excursions, offering information about natural hazards and their management, as well as the region’s fauna and flora.

In Les Marécottes, the Zoo des Marécottes showcases much of the alpine wildlife in a natural setting. The zoo is about a five-minute walk from the railway station. This makes it possible to focus on different aspects of a trip: the landscape and trails through the gorges, themed trails at La Creusaz, or alpine wildlife in Les Marécottes.

Regional products and visits

At Alpage d’Emaney, the Gabioud family has been making cheese for more than 100 years. In summer, they produce Raclette du Valais AOP, butter, tommes and Sérac. Visitors can sample regional products on the terrace and watch the animals spending the summer on the alp. Check the dates for this seasonal offering before your trip.

Moulin Fine also combines cultural heritage with a glimpse of traditional work: it is the region’s last operating water mill. Guided tours with explanations and demonstrations of how it works are available by reservation. On open days, the mill operates and grinds grain into flour; the programme may vary seasonally.
