The entrance to the Gorges du Trient is in Vernayaz, right next to the Mont-Blanc Express station.

Gorges du Trient and Cascade de la Pissevache

The Trient has carved the Gorges du Trient through crystalline rock; erosion dates back around 20,000 years. The visitor trail through the gorge includes walkways secured to the rock faces. Since 1988, the Gorges du Trient have been part of the Swiss Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments.

The Cascade de la Pissevache has a drop of 116 metres. Its flow decreased considerably after the dam was built on the Salanfe plateau. The history of visits to the site also goes back a long way: the Gorges du Trient were opened to visitors from 1860 onwards. In 1866, galleries were built to give visitors a close-up view of the Cascade de la Pissevache. The development of the gorge and waterfall for tourism marked the beginning of Belle Époque tourism in Vernayaz.

Historic trails and their routes

The Route des Diligences has 51 hairpin bends and is considered a varied family hike. It leads to Finhaut and is used by hikers and mountain bikers along a 13-kilometre route through natural landscapes. It is also part of the historic and cultural ViaCook route, which follows the path taken through Switzerland in 1863 by the first organised group tour led by travel pioneer Thomas Cook.

From Vernayaz, the Route des Diligences can be reached by train; from Finhaut, you can return on the Mont-Blanc Express. Parking is available at Vernayaz station. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable before your trip.

Another route is the Tour de Vernayaz audio trail: it passes through Fond du Mont, by the Cascade de la Pissevache and along the banks of the Rhône. The stated duration is an estimate of walking time only; it does not include breaks to listen to the podcasts. One of the audio features is about fish farming. The Parcours dans la vallée du Trient can also be planned using the Mont-Blanc Express: thanks to the cog railway, the route can be completed in several stages.

Local history and cultural highlights

Vernayaz station was formerly called “Vernayaz-Gorges du Trient”. The name referred to the starting point of the trail to this well-known excursion destination. The historic hotels built in Vernayaz in the 19th century bear witness to the tourism boom, which coincided with the railway of 1859 and the construction of the Route des Diligences to Chamonix from 1855 to 1867. The Cascade de la Pissevache also shaped the area’s cultural history: artists captured it in their works, bringing it international recognition.

The underground fortifications of Vernayaz were built during the Second World War to protect the Rhône plain. The underground fort extends across three levels and comprises a maze of branching galleries. The escape room game “Stratégie” is also offered in the former I-Docens military fortress.

The Cascade de Salanfe is also part of the history of water technology. A fulling mill, a hammer mill and a water-powered sawmill began operating there at the end of the 18th century. A century later, a power station was built at the upper end of the Cascade de Salanfe; farther up the gorge, a water intake was constructed to power the machines’ turbines.
