If you’re looking for a hotel in Täsch, you can tailor your stay to your interests: winter activities, alpine scenery and village history offer different highlights. To get your bearings, it helps to think of Täsch and Täschalp as separate places. Täsch is the village in the Matter Valley; Täschalp is a hiking area and also the starting point for the approach to Täschhütte SAC.

Mountain Scenery Around Täschalp

The municipality of Täsch includes the village, the hamlets of Zermettjen and Täschberg, and the Täschalp hiking area. Täschalp lies in a hollow between the slopes of the Rothorn and the four-thousand-metre peaks of the Mischabel massif. Cows, farms and a cheese dairy shape the lush green alpine pasture; the crystal-clear mountain stream Mellichbach also flows there.

The short approach to Täschhütte SAC starts at Täschalp and is considered manageable even with children. Conditions may affect its suitability. The Täschalp taxi takes guests from Täsch to Täschalp three times a day. As the frequency may vary by season, check the service before your journey.

Winter Trails, Cross-Country Skiing and Sledging

The Täsch Panorama Route (No. 130) is an easy, 2.9-kilometre circular winter trail, with a walking time of about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The route crosses wide, snow-covered areas on the valley floor and passes through a protected forest and a romantic mixed forest. Check current conditions and possible diversions before setting out.

The Täsch cross-country ski trail lies on the flat valley floor and is suitable for beginners and relaxed cross-country skiing. Here too, you should check snow and trail conditions in advance. The Täsch sledging run offers a different focus: from the Täschberg chapel, it provides an impressive view down towards Täsch. Night sledging and full-moon sledging are possible on the run; check in advance whether organised trips are currently being offered.

The winter activities therefore differ in terms of activity and time commitment: the circular trail has an approximate duration, the cross-country ski trail is suitable for beginners and relaxed skiing, and the sledging run is notable for its views and possible evening and full-moon outings. The Schalisee recreation area offers families and friends a place to spend time together.

Village Walk and Chapels

A village walk brings Täsch’s history to life. Traditional Valais houses, barns, granaries and old stables shape the village’s appearance. A brochure about the walk is available from the tourist office. The Fuxstein Chapel is carved into a boulder on the valley floor. It offers a peaceful place for Sunday walkers who wish to pray in quiet.

The Ranft Chapel is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Flüe, also known as Brother Klaus. Every year on 25 September, the feast day of Saint Nicholas of Flüe, a candlelit procession makes its way to the chapel; a Holy Mass is then celebrated there. If you’re planning around this date, confirm the current arrangements locally. Masses and other services in Täsch’s Roman Catholic church are held in Portuguese and German. Service times may change.

Getting There and Practical Information

Täsch is the last place in the Matter Valley before Zermatt. The road towards Zermatt has been closed to private traffic since 1972; you must take the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway to continue your journey. Cars can be parked in the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch car park, built in 2006, at the railway station.

For your planning, you can choose between winter activities, a stay in the mountain scenery of Täschalp, and a closer look at the village’s history. Which focus suits your trip depends on which of these sides of Täsch you would like to experience.
