Suonen paths, a mountain lake above the village, and the local wine and village culture give your stay in Visperterminen a range of different highlights. When planning your hotel trip, you can first consider whether you would like to spend more time on hiking trails, enjoying cultural experiences, or taking part in seasonal activities. The distance and time details for each tour help you plan each day separately.

Hiking between the Suone and panoramic views

The Kapellenweg – Suone Bodmeri circular hiking trail follows the Suone Bodmeri and passes ten historic Rosary chapels before reaching the forest chapel of «Maria Heimsuchung», a pilgrimage site. The Suone carries water from early April to mid-September. The route and water flow are therefore two separate aspects to consider when planning; local conditions may change.

The Visperterminen Panorama Trail starts and ends at the Giw mountain station. The loop is 6.8 kilometres long, takes about 2 hours and 50 minutes, and involves 357 metres of ascent and descent each. Above 2,000 metres, the trail leads from Giw to Gebidum along marked paths. From there, the 360-degree view stretches across the Bernese and Valais Alps as well as the Nanztal valley. These details give you concrete reference points for planning your time and elevation gain, without equating the tour with a short walk.

Giw and Lake Gebidem

Lake Gebidem lies above Visperterminen. The mountain lake is home to brown trout, rainbow trout, and a few Arctic char. From Visperterminen, you can reach it by chairlift to Giw, followed by a walk of about 30 minutes. The 30 minutes refers to the walk from Giw; the chairlift ride comes first. Lift operation and local conditions affect access. The chairlift runs from the village through coniferous forests to an altitude of 2,000 metres and is subject to the season and weather.

Village history, customs, and crafts

At the Egga residential museum, the exhibition includes an apartment dating from 1701 that was inhabited until 1985. The tour takes you through every room of the old Terbiner apartment, which is considered a testament to earlier rural living culture. The museum visit thus focuses on both the specific living conditions and their historical context.

Local customs include the Corpus Christi procession, with music, prayers, pipes, singing, and wine. If you would like to include this celebration in your travel plans, check the date for that year. The wrist warmers «Chirlihandstees» are also linked to local craftsmanship: local women make them by hand over several hours. Workshops can be booked individually with seven days’ notice; confirm the lead time before making your plans.

Heida wine and regional specialities

The St. Jodern winery in Visperterminen was founded as a cooperative winery in 1979. More than 500 cooperative members jointly market wines from the Heidadorf of Visperterminen and the Vispertal valley. The Visperterminen dairy has been operating since December 1956; Heida cheese, Heida Hobelkäse, and Ziger are among the local specialities.

Heida Wanderspass combines a hike with a Heida speciality platter at the Giw mountain restaurant. It includes air-dried Valais meat from the village, cheese from the village dairy, traditionally baked bread, and a tasting of local Heida wines. The menu and availability may change. The Wii-Grill-Fäscht wine hike includes seven stops serving Valais and Visperterminen specialities; check current event dates and availability.

Seasonal activities

Winter activities also vary in type and conditions. The Visperterminen ski area has two drag lifts and a practice lift for the youngest beginners; facilities and seasonal operations may change. The approximately seven-kilometre Heidadorf toboggan run leads from Giw to the chairlift valley station. Its use depends on snow and local conditions. In the village, the Bodumatte natural ice rink is prepared by the local ice hockey club and can be used free of charge, provided frost and local operations allow.

For another seasonal descent, the scooter route runs from the GIW mountain station for about seven kilometres along the paved mountain road to the chairlift valley station in Visperterminen. Confirm current operating dates in advance. If you would like to go mountain biking, the Bodmer Loop is a circular trail starting and ending in Visperterminen; the route has 323 metres of ascent and 323 metres of descent.
