Panex lies at an altitude of 935 metres on a promontory between the valleys of the Grande Eau and the Bondet. Hiking trails, a geological feature and the Village of Insects are among the highlights of a stay. The activities vary: one route focuses on the history of salt, while others pass through varied landscapes or vineyards.

Bus Service and the Sentier du Sel

Bus route 145 connects Ollon station with Plambuit via Panex. You can use it to reach the starting point of the Sentier du Sel or to return after a hike. Timetables vary by season and day, so check them before travelling. The Sentier du Sel runs from Salins through Panex to the Bévieux Saltworks. Educational panels along the trail explain the history of salt and are also suitable for children.

Hikes with Different Highlights

The Villars–Les Ecovets–Panex–Ollon hike passes through varied landscapes and the village of Panex. From Les Ecovets, the route initially follows the road, then takes a forest path towards Panex. This hike therefore includes a specific stretch through the village and forest.

After passing through the vineyards, the Sentier de Provence leads from the hamlet of Verschiez towards Panex. You can stop at a winegrower along the way to sample local wines. A gravel route also passes through the hamlet of Panex; sections run through vineyards and above Ollon, with views of the Grand Muveran. The routes therefore offer different highlights: the trail through Panex, vineyards and landscapes, as well as the option of wine tasting.

Creux d’Enfer and Sainte-Marie Forest

Creux d’Enfer is a geological feature in Sainte-Marie Forest and a wooded sinkhole near the entrance to Panex. At the upper rim, it measures about 150 metres in diameter and is at least 63 metres deep. Creux d’Enfer can be reached from the Panex, Village bus stop with a walk of about ten minutes. The described approach starts at the entrance to Panex from the direction of Ollon; a small road towards Salins leads about 600 metres to the edge of the forest.

Creux d’Enfer is also known as the Grotte aux Fées (Fairy Cave). Local legends about the hollow are associated with this name. Here, a striking landform meets a local storytelling tradition.

Insect Hotels in the Village of Insects

The Village of Insects in Panex can be visited during the day. Check the visiting arrangements before setting out. Numerous façades feature insect hotels that are frequently used. They provide habitats for wild bees, solitary wasps, white-tailed bumblebees, ladybirds, ground beetles and earwigs. A visit therefore offers an insight into insect hotels and an introduction to the different groups of insects they support.

The Wider Municipality of Ollon

The wider area of the municipality of Ollon features a variety of agricultural landscapes. The RhĂ´ne plain is home to arable farming and fruit growing, while vineyards cover sunny slopes. The area also includes sweet chestnut forests, dairy farming, livestock breeding and extensive alpine pastures at higher elevations. This information describes the wider municipality and complements the guide to specific trails and destinations in Panex.
